Grandfather rights

Do grandfather rights still exist for forklift driving? Got a friend who’s taken early retirement looking for some summer work and he’s keen to help around the yard with the drier etc. He’s 65 years old and an ex plant mechanic and 360 operator so capable etc.

Depends on your insurance company, nfu just say operator should have had adequate training

I'd like to see that stand up in court.

There is no excuse for no regular formal training, and a 'mature' person who's been driving a loader for many years is much more likely to be the most dangerous / risk taker.

Grandfather rights are slowly being kicked into touch. Now, even using a hand held knapsack no longer apply's.

So your saying someone with 50yrs experience is a worse operator than a 18yr old fresh out of college with a ticket to say he can drive a forklift 😏

Pardon my language but absolute b ollocks

Not saying it's right, but it's HSE bread and butter. Years ago a plant hire operator in Yorkshire had operated machines thrown off a site by the HSE as they had no competency tickets. He challenged them to send any operator from anywhere to perform and operate a machine safer and better than his operators. Didn't matter, until his team had tickets, they could not go on any site, anywhere.

The problem is agriculture is a LOT different to site work for tickets and there lies the problem, if there was 1 ticket recognised by everyone it would be a lot simpler

There generally is one ticket now, but as long as the training provider is ' recognised' all is good. However, Agriculture already get's away with murder with other mandatory tests applicable to Commercial businesses using similar machines, as most (not all) work is carried out off road.

The best route to getting the ticket in the Ag sector is via the ag companies such as BAGMA or LANTRA.
