Granulated lime versus ground limestone

Guess I'm lucky, just dig sand out of my links and get contractor to spread it. Good shell sand

Sounds lucky to me. Haulage thats the killer on lime here.
If you did that down here you'd have SNH and SEPA on your back pretty quick.

Are you not hampered by that kind of thing up in Orkney?
Then again you might just be Donald Trump;)

Does it dry out ground too?

Yes, certainly, but probably not long term.

I think it's hydrated lime that is used on soil stabilisation projects. If a road needs to go through wet land or if a project can't be held up regardless of weather, I think the contractors will layer wet soil with hydrated lime to dry it out. It works two ways, one is the actual bone dry lime soaking up moisture, and two, the moist soil causes a chemical reaction which creates heat. The soil warms up and moisture evaporates off.
As long as the wet is kept off it, job done.

It's ok as long as it's for own use on our land. Licence would be required should I wish to sell any

Yep, it does, very well. We supply quite a bit in 1 tonne bags for soil stabilisation projects. Quick lime/burnt lime is applied to saturated soil which then heats up very quickly drying the soil out and hardening it off to aid compaction. Once the water and lime have mixed and the chemical reaction has occurred it becomes hydrated lime.

Bars of quick lime were used years ago in theatres that shone a bright theatrical spot lamp onto the bars causing a brilliant white light. If you were on stage, this was known as being in the 'limelight'. Every days a school day. :bookworm:

Thought I would take this back to the top. Father in law was given the hard sell today. Apparently 1 bag of bunns granular lime is worth 20t ground lime. Hook line and sinker as he took 9 bags. One for you @Cab-over Pete

Words fail me. Nearly.

The salesman is an arse. And a liar. And he has stolen your money.

I almost wish I was going to Cereals just to visit their stand for a quick chat.

I said to him I know a guy who loves talking about granulated lime  arses of the highest nature. I'd load it up and take it back for him. Will see what he says

450kg/acre of granular lime onto a heather hill turned turned it green in 2yr, £110/ton, would of taken 1000 ton of powder lime tipped 3 mile away from furthest out point, u can't complain with tht

All I will say jt85, " If you could get proper ground limestone with a neutralising value of about 55% spread on your land for less than £ 60 per tonne you'd have had twice better value for your money!" But your pushy fertiliser salesman doesnt get much or any commision from bulk ag lime.

Dont kid yourself, its all marketing hype ,by sales people greedy for commision, look at the nv % on the bag, and what the value of bulk lime is ,get a calculator out and do a bit of maths as to what each costs. There will be a high % age of very fine powder in bulk lime only needs 25% and its matches bagged lime pellets, and the rest would be free.no brainer!
