Grass field price

I have been offered 28 acres of grass to cut this year and wonder how much I should be paying for the privilege?

The owner of said field Is suggesting rather than a price per acre I should pay him per bale. He is suggesting 7 pounds per bale... based on 4ft rounds

Sounds fair if it's decent quality grass. As long as he's not baling it, with an old Claas Rollant baler.

I should of made it clear. He wants 7 pounds per bale ... That i make myself. So ill be mowing tedding and baling and wrapping. he will simply be taking 7 pounds per bale from me for the privilege of allowing me to do all the work myself

It is a nice grass field will make Good haylidge 1st cut.

The next Question is if I do a 2nd cut for silage how much should I be paying him for that.

Alot depends on the crop, if your going to have 8+ bales to the acre then £7 /bale isnt so bad but if your burning fuel for 4 bales to the acre then its a waste of time. Second cut ought to be cheaper and maybe £5 / bale

Frightening when you work that cost into it, my silage ground has had 100kg nitram at a cost of £65 acre before you take into account the fuel to spread it. I wouldnt get rich selling the grass at £7 bale or £70/acre

Don't think I will bale any this year, to costly , but if someone is selling for £7 , fill your boots

I have taken some extra ground on for one cut at £50 acre and put £30/ac of fert on it

I've had an arrangement with a local dairy farmer for a couple of years, where he does all the work and pays me by the bale for a similar acreage. It is good quality grass and he aims for 4-6 bales/ac of good feed, rather than bulk.
We've been on £10/bale for a couple of years (at his insistence) and agreed on £12 this year. Nutrient replacement will take up a lot of that.

If you can get decent grass at £7/bale, get it snapped up. If if it's rank shite that's not been grazed since last summer, it's too much.
