Grass kg/m3

New into grass so be gentle! We put a Italian ryegrass ley down in September to make some hay off it for the boss’s wife ever growing numbers of horses. Anyway it got so thick that we’ve had a silage cut taken and volume of grass was massive but the weights aren’t great. 14-18t silage trailers taking 9-12 tonnes of weight.

A 18t ( 20ft) silage trailer will hold around 10t of 30% DM grass I think. That is all relative to chop length as I did a few hundred acres of 5mm chop length, over a weighbridge a 18t 20ft Smyth was holding 18t of 30% DM grass.

Normally at 30% you should work at 600-800kg/m3.

I’m not sure there is such a thing as a 14/18 ton silage trailer, the tonnages quoted are for grain capacity without silage sides, the silage sides add extra capacity for silage but have no direct relevance to the quoted trailer size, best measurement for capacity is cubic metres but as said before, dry matter and chop length can make a big difference to weight carried.

Yes sorry I should of said the trailers were around 35 cubic metres in size which were holding 10-11 tonnes. There was smaller ones and a couple of bigger ones.
