Grass weed cultivation

Have a few fields this year which are both very bumpy from last year's cultivations (trying to drill when it was too wet didnt help) and have areas of really thick grass as there was no competition from the crop due to poor establishment. this will be sprayed off, and i've no doubt the direct drill would cope but need to cultivate to level it out and then probably drill with our combi drill (suffolk coulters). Whats the best way to avoid getting big lumps of grass clogging everything up and stopping the next crop growing? And no, ploughing isn't an option (it's what i'd probably do if i had the choice). We have a superflow and a set of vari discs, but I have a feeling using either of those will just result in big lumps of grass everywhere and half the field not having any crop growing on it. Any suggestions?
