Gravel drive at my house

Hi all,

I have a gravel drive at my house. I’m finding that it tends to pack tight over time where cars travel on it.

We’re thinking of changing the type/colour of gravel so any advice would be appreciated.

I want to stick with gravel because of cost and I don’t need any drains or shores.

Run down it with a gubbber or power harrow , will pull the stones up again , no matter how much gravel you put down it will all ways go like that , a horse area leveler is a good thing to do them with tines to dig it up then a bar to level in out again

Your issue is because you are using natural,or round stone.I’d get some 3/4 crushed as it will bind together better and not roll about.yours looks like it’s just compacted with traffic.just top it up and it will be fine.only needs to be a stone deep too

Cheers everyone. It hasn’t a membrane underneath but went on clean large stone. I think it’s just a buildup of grit and dirt amongst the pebbles.
I had thought about running a powerharrow over it.
Herself is anxious to go for a different gravel colour so I’ll probably be replacing it anyway.

Just thinking about ways of putting a margin at the edge of the grass. Priced Corten steel but it’s not cheap given the length involved.

This is an example of what I use. Hard as anything so never grinds to dust like gravel will and won’t pack down. In 20t tippers it’s as reasonably priced too compared to any alternative.

I think you’re right. I used to do it when I first put it down ten years ago. I guess the big country houses have people to do this sort of thing!!!!
For a membrane you can use old fertilizer sacks, the outer not the plastic, cut them open and overlap well,
