how long would a 5ac good crop of stubble turnips last 20 bullocks 14 months old ?? its been a old pasture that grew poor , burnt it off and disced and spread the stubbles on at 1.5kg acre in july, thought cattle would break down the soil easier for re seeding next spring , hopefully level it a bit !!!!! any thoughts???

With 60 or so bbs of silage I'd want it to last most the winter here, Nov-mid April
Hope that helps.
Take them a minute or to learn to eat the bulbs!

i have 50 oct-jan born so slightly younger, they will have 14 acres of turnips/forage rape mix. plus 1-2 bales of silage a day. will last nov-april. but they have access to a shed at night/bad weather, so they wont eat as much as fully outdoors. depends on how much silage you are going to feed/how long do you want it to last

Measure a square metre, pull up the turnips and weigh them, multiply by 20000 and that will give you your total weight of crop. Decide how much they will need in a day and divide one by the other.

10,000 sq m in a hectare, so surely multiply the weight on a sq metre by the average DM% (8-9%) , then multiply by 10,000?
That gives DM yield per hectare from the crop, then you can work from there, allowing for the (DM) quantity of silage you’ll be supplying.

Any other guess (based on seed rate, drilling date, etc) is just going to be plucking figures out of the air tbh. Crops vary so much.

That's why I said multiply by 20 000, as he has 2 hectares.

I know it' going to vary.

Also, they should carry on growing, so weighing a square metre is hopefully going to be a conservative estimate of what the last ones will be like by the time he gets to them.

just playing devils advocate here : hopefully the cattle will grow too and thus their DM intake will increase with growth, thus counteracting the turnip growth ??🤔🤔🤔
