Been in our house 3 yrs now and the frame has moved quite a bit . I'm well aware that it will continue to move for a few more yrs yet .
Question what have others used to fill in the gaps that appear between the frame and plaster etc etc .

No nonsense fine filler, comes in a cartridge for a caulking gun. Mask the oak, fill, float then cut the masking tape with a Stanley knife for a neat edge.

I used a number of different ideas, the silicon flexi sealants were not great. I ended up using a tub form of the lighweight filler @Will2May recommends. Wish the tube version was available when needed 20+ years ago. :)

I remember reading an article written by a guy living near Presteigne on a hillside in an oak framed house, West facing, and it tended to catch the wind. Rocked and creaked and moved in a big blow.... 400+ years old!!!

Incidentally, who built the frame for your house? I'm going to be looking for a contractor to build a traditional A frame roof for a bespoke barn I've got planning for, I need someone who can work with large timber frames, not necessarily in oak, but the scale of the carpentry will be the same.

Lots of people doing oak frames now, but for a traditional bespoke frame try carpenter oak or look up a guy called Henry Russell.

Henry Russel travels the country teaching all the old skills, I attended one of the courses he ran with the forestry commission a few years ago, Google "Henry Russell oak frame". There's a bit on Facebook about courses he has done, definitely part of the hippy type framer who does it for the love of wood and the green credentials. Where as most commercial companies are there to make money from the "Grand Designs" type self builder.
Carpenter oak built a great oak frame a shooting hut locally using trees from the woods where the shooting is done. I like the idea of using trees for a frame from as near as possible. Rather than eastern European oak shipped over like the bigger commercial boys do.
