If I think bales will be over a year kept I use green. Mostly for first cut. Black for second. Just helps to not get a secondary fermentation. Place I baled Saturday have 2 year old black in piles of sh1t but the three year old green was still reasonable shape. Last years was stilling as if made last week in green wrap. I have baled the same fields for this person for 20 years. So know what was used.

I use green for haylage and black for silage. Our silage is usually used within 8 or 9 months but haylage could be stored for up to 2 years depending upon supply and demand. Green definitely stays cooler when our annual day of summer arrives...

which is best for haylage/silage?
Contractor says Black for damper and Green for haylage, most of his work is extra dry or catch crop hay for horses
We changed from black to white 3 yrs ago and the difference In quality was startling,
Far less mould and waste, not nearly as much bird damage,

Changed from Green to Black last year and it was a big improvement, BUT changed from round to square and i would not go back, waste reduced by 99%,
Instead of a whole bale turning to muck , due to winter / damage, just a small part, all down to square bale for me

Both

Experiment last year in field next to a rookery that's (not surprisingly!) hellish for bird damage - 1/3 black, 1/3 green, 1/3 striped. Knew I had to leave them for a couple of days before time permitted getting them in....

Black ones had a few holes, green ones so bad that I re-wrapped several, striped ones didn't even have bird shyte on them
