we have customers who we grind hay for with a roto-grind machine - usually 4-6 weeks supply at a time and no reports of issues. Would surely depend on moisture content but I would expect that if it was damp enough to be a problem chopped then it wasnt going to be much good in bales.
I thought that would be the case, hay should be the same moisture as straw? I can’t get at any low potash grass silage for the dry cows for a few months. So I think the easiest thing to do will be to grind some hay.
Chaff used to be a popular feed for horses to stop them getting fat. Chopped hay and straw mixed. Chopping straw makes it easier for horses to digest but it is lower in feed value than hay. Can't speak for cattle but Google is sure to know.
