I don’t think he needs the rural vote, we’re pretty inconsequential really.

We are and they know it.
Now that they have the former Labour areas in the north of England voting for them they can and are treating us as inconsequential.
Find it hard to believe anyone in agriculture still thinks we matter to them. Trees and wilderness is all the powers that be want to see the UK countryside used for.

The is supposed to be a 15 year lead time on this deal, I don’t think anybody needs to panic just yet. Aussie meat has been selling into the Far East for higher prices than ours here, and it’s a lot shorter trip. Saw an interview with an Aus trader said ‘why would we send it to you cheaper?

It’s not the Aussie deal that’s the problem.
It’s that the US, Brazil, NZ etc. will start of trade negotiations with them by asking for exactly the same terms as we’ve already agreed to with others.

IMO it's not just about the politicians. I can't remember Australian meat being advertised over here - or beef from South America but New Zealand overtly advertised lamb over here in the '60s - to 2000's with no compunction and no interference from MAFF, Min of Ag, Defra - call it what you will. In the '70s and 80s Raewyn Blade the NZ actress made NZ lamb into a quality product in the eyes of the british housewife.

And where we we?, where are we now in marketing our own produce. Reliance on Red Tractor, NFU and RSPCA Assured really brings nothing in terms of desirability and is never directly beamed into our living rooms. A 20+ year old sticker on a packet and a sh*t load of form filling is not what's needed

And that rant's just about meat - we could go on about veg, fish and fruit........ A 5 year parliament cannot be trusted and we all know that

What don't get is they've just had a big summit down the road, discussing saving the planet, next thing is we're doing a deal to import trade from about as far away from here as is remotely possible?

Food miles anyone!

:scratchhead:

Yes, but Bois has a cunning plan. By turning our 0.2% of the worlds landmass over to trees and wilderness rather than farmland we can save the planet from global warming.

Not a beef farmer, but why aren’t we swapped with South American beef? Wouldn’t it be cheaper than Ozzie stuff? Or is it restricted by tariffs atm?
Argentina has put an export ban on beef for 30 days there is a shortage of beef world wide Australia is in rebuilding phase after drought and the big northen heards the beef would never go to the UK

In respect of the OP, gove (I won’t regale his name with a capital letter) has never answered a question straight in all his life.

If he said good morning to you I would be mindful to check your watch. He’s a devious little snake who I fear will squirm his way into No.10 one day.

We think we’re shafted now, wait until he’s paddling the canoe.

Well, he is vastly more intelligent and bright than the present incumbent, and is, I suspect, less likely to be led by a bit of totty with a firm hold on his *ock...! Whether this is good or bad, I am unsure ;)

I have been listening to radio news a couple of times today, and a bit of Jeremy Vine, and have yet to hear anyone interviewed come up with any persuasive argument to counter what Truss etc have been saying. Just a bit of vague level playing-field cliche and guff about our produce being the best in the world, and, living in a tiny country, we have more livestock in transit rules to abide by than Aus do. If I were a member of the public, I'd be thinking our industry was making a p-iss poor job of representing whatever case we may have.

I dont doubt that gove is more intelligent or thinks he is but unfortunately he seems to think this trait endears him to the world at large when most without his intelligence can see straight through the (choose your own expletive)......... and as for borris being lead wether its good or bad his track record says that will change in time

Does he have an annoying neurotic sniff, or was I hearing things? I once worked with a boss like that. I used to have a bet with myself how many seconds until the next sniff. If I hadn't done that, I think I would happily have strangled him! The average was about 15 seconds as I recall....
Tis rumoured he has a snor, ahem, sniffing habit. Allegedly.
