Growing grain rye.

Wow that’s expensive, I’ve been quoted £630 to £650 per pack. Should do 6ha depending on seed rate.

No, can’t FSS from hybrid but then I’m not that worried. We’ve grown hybrid barley and rape, so accepting hybrids to a degree.
Seed rate will be about 80 kg /ha so 6 ha pack will be about half a tonne so we’ll over £1000 per tonne ......

Biggest issue in rye for milling is ergot. I'm guessing that this is less of an issue for pig feed.
Don't drill it to deep, not too much pgr and plenty of pgr, 3 splits ccc+modus x 2 then whack of terpal if it's not in drought.

Hello All,

Glencore Agriculture UK does indeed have a Rye contract available for Harvest 2021, along with our partners at Agrii.

We have a few different pricing and movement options available. Should you wish to know more, please get in touch via direct message on here. Alternatively please call 01844 261261, and ask to speak to a member of our Farm Team.

We wish you all the best with the remainder of Harvest and look forward to hopefully hearing from some of you soon.

Being nosey but what's the sudden interest in rye???? Weve got glencore on here touting for business and I've had a contract offer via email from another merchant who I've never dealt with but is keen for my business.

One thing though, which no one has mentioned is what are you going to pay for it?????

Sold no osr seed. Therefore gap. If they don't fill it someone else will. First fruits etc.

Good Evening Robbie,

The exact pricing and nature of the contract is not something we want to share on a public forum.

However, as mentioned above we are quite happy to explain/share this information directly with those who would genuinely be interested in growing it for Harvest 2021.

There is an interest in brewing/distilling, also pig guys who are using it are finding it feeds well. I think the Scandinavian pig farmers have quite a high inclusion rate in their growers.

The email which was a contract offer didnt even have a price just about a pool, no mention what so ever as to weather it would be above or below wheat or even a guide. How can anyone get excited about a contract or want to sign up to something they have no idea of price on.

I'll grow rye off my own back and anyone who offers the right money can have it.

I've signed up some into a pool to allow me to grow more tonnage with an outlet but the rest is grown on spec at the moment, there is interest but its hard going, been at it for 5 seasons now and had carry over from 2018 that has only just shifted, but at least it was for decent money, we have to be careful that we don't give it away.

This is how I understand it. The Danes use a lot in their pig rations and there is a constant effort to improve efficiency over here.

I know I shouldn't be so sceptical but the contract states you have to buy there recommended seed and it's a hybrid so no farm saving so surprise surprise you have to buy more of there seed again next year.

Why couldnt I put my crop into the pool and buy my own seed???

High margin on seed.
Pool, unless with a base price, means you could get anything.

Above gives ace incentive to flog loads of seed and lack of price means no merchant consequence to oversupply - the end user probably would be extra pleased.

I’ve been looking a Serafino from the KWS stable. Think it looks the best all round variety they offer. Seed is expensive compared with wheat and two row barley, but a smaller premium compared to hybrid barley for instance.
I’ve got some Serafino on order, £600/pack.
Trying 13ha on fairly light soil. Contract price £30 below wheat futures. No BYDV issues or take all so will drill at the end of September.

Thats my thoughts on it. How can they expect a grower to sign up when they wont give an indication of price. The only certainty in the contract I saw was 60 quid paid in two interim payments but what's the balance payment is it a tenner or 100££££

I'll have about 30% in their pool, woi,d rather a fixed price or a wheat based one but we will see how it goes. Ive already informed the that their seed is a little bit more expensive than my usual sources. You could go for cheaper seed but it is cheaper for a reason. Vibrance isnt worth it in my opinion.
