Growing linseed after linseed

How much N would you suggest?

Premium Crops have good technical agronomy bulletins. They recommend that you put 50 kg N on the crop in the seedbed and the rest at green bud stage. If green bud is during a drought then that's not use but if you want to keep the crop standing it's not bad advice. You're growing seed, not straw. Same goes for cereals though we all do N for spring cereals early in the plant's life.

What are the pitfalls that so discourage second attempts?

Not as excellent as supposed BG control.
Not as high yield as expected.
Not keen on heavy land in bad winters, but what is?

Two growers enjoyed the early harvest. But said yields no better than spring for worse by control and higher costs. As usual with linseed excellent wheat afterwards.

Ive seen a lot of flat winter linseed. Most decent herbicides eg Crawler seem to knock it about a bit.

There are a few regular growers who have got the hang of it but for amateurs you can get similar yields and better grass weed control from spring linseed for a lot less expenditure if you don’t mind the later harvest dates.

Edited to add: Perhaps the word amateur is a bit condescending but linseed is like a lot of break crops - you either wish you’d done more or wish you’d never bothered!
