Are there any on the forum? From a thread on the Livestock page, what are pure bred Guernsey bull calves like? Are they worth rearing up for beef?

Whats wrong with them? Thought all their milk was A2.
Udders are shocking and feet aren't much better, have seen them reared as rose veal were @Cows 'n grass came from but only was doing a few, localish jersey herd is doing it to but selling to pubs and restaurants, and by the way he was taking about it , it wasn't easy money.

Im very surprised if the pure bred bull calves are not suited for anything other than rose veal. The Guernsey cows i saw on Guernsey a good few years ago were superb, and looked like a really good dual purpose breed, much like traditional British Friesians used to be.They were nothing like frail little Jerseys, and carried a fair amount of flesh.

I milked a few on a farm once.....
I wouldn't admit to it if I did own any
:banghead:Fecking Hell, has no one got anything good to say about them! I always fancied keeping a few,and selling A2 milk from a kiosk. It seemed like a good idea.Could do with a comment or two from Tim Gibson, thought he milks a few for Brymor ice cream at Jervaulx Abbey.

My group did thin themselves out pretty quickly. I've just got one pedigree Guernsey left, she's called Miriam and she never carries any flesh, she's definitely more jersey than she is BF type.

Like all cows there's as much variation within the breed as there is between breeds and there's a lot of red and white Holstein in some Gurnseys.

After looking on the Breed society website, and their facebook page,i would have to agree with you. They are too thin/dont carry enough flesh, and look like they have got some red and white Holstein in there. Its a shame really what they have done to the breed over the last 20 years or so.I am sure they were much better then. The ones i saw in Guernsey were really good thick set cows, but that was the end of the 90s.

To give them their due, the Guernseys are undergoing something of a resurgence at the moment. Is anyone familiar with the good Guernsey cow that has been winning at shows in the South-West?
She looks a tremendous cow, but bears more resemblance to an Ayrshire than a Guernsey.
