You have lost me:). I have found it sometimes it is difficult to keep a 3ft square hole in the right place to accept a stanchion .
Worst shed marking out, we got a long tape marked meteres one side and ft & ins tother side.
after a few hours of total war with staff, it was discovered that the tape started at 0 on the ft side,
but 0+200 mm on the metric side.

A chap up the road had one of those!, he discovered it just in time to ring the roof truss makers to stop the order for his Garage... his order was next on the line... the tape got smashed into little pieces.

I believe every modern day shed erector uses holding down bolts. Getting your bases and bolts correct is not an over complicated job, in fact only takes about an hour to set out for 100ft by 50ft. The easy pythag theory 3,4,5 is idiot proof.
I believe the way that Joe is describing is old school and not the most practical nor is it quicker, cheaper or safer. How would you feel about leaving a building that is just 'proped up'. Many years ago there were lots of accidents in the trade when they used this method.
Have you looked at the cost of a second hand building?

you have over complicated a straight forward job
ye I was thinking of something dug into a banking side where using a tape to measure the distance would actually be a diagonal say 4ft higher on a 30ft span you would actually only be 29ft 8.4 inch < so not majorly out considering the extreme site I "made up" < I hope most sites are leveller than 4ft in 30ft!

if your finding it hard to get a 3ft square hole in the right spot you definitely need a new tape! and don't measure each bay measure from 1 end ie 15ft 30ft 45ft not just 15ft then move to next bay.

if it was the "rag" bolt bit stand your frame up as you described on pre poured bases then drill and bolt down when you are happy its correct. this is a rag bolt just incase:

4' out over 30' is nothing  we did a 60x30 there was 8 foot of fall on the bank from the front to back 30' way. Just put back string lower so you can plumb it

I'm trying to educate myself a bit on the process of setting out for a shed, would love to get something up this year but there'll never be the money to pay for erection.
It might end up being a pole barn but i'd like a steel frame really

Rough sketch to give you an idea how to set up best I can

Wrote at the bottom how I find square, it's more accurate than the 3,4,5 method i find.

Someone may have an easier way of course

Brilliant thanks. I'm familiar with squaring up as it were, but never snub good information on a forum, someone will need it.
Thanks for the sketch and the pictures :)
You have somewhat de-mystified it :)

Have put up a few here over the years, Dont even think about bolting it down, order postd 2ft6in
longer than needed. dig pits, concrete bottoms all to the same level.
Assemble frames , a 30ft frame can be lifted/pulled up into position, have plenty of rope and anchors to hold it in place, just put a few purlins up to keep frame stable untill all frames in place.
once frame stood up, adjust for square and level and then pour concrete.
For roof, box profile one sheet per side, they can come in whatever lenth needed
That's exactly how I would do it
And how we always done it at home, except dad never bothered to get the bases all the same level so we cut posts or shove stones under

Why convert to metres when the shed is already made in feet? There was a similar thread as to how various items are supplied in odd metric sizes because the manufacture is still in imperial. Will sheds just be made in 6m bays in the future and save all those odd centimetres?

Our last few sheds are 6m bays

Do all measurements in metric so it's possible to work out check diagonals by calculator or triangle calculator. Can't do that in imperial

Because feet and inches are crap to work with. No need for them to be made in 6m bays, 4572 and 6096 bays work just fine for me :)
