Guns on farms

Christ the way you lot are going on I might have to start shutting the doors at night. Locking them s seems a bit excessive!

We are the same, doors never locked, sometimes outside doors left open all night. But, there are areas where night visitors of the two legged type is a big problem.

How many times have you been visited by the local police or crime prevention to offer advice.

We've been here over 30 years, out of the way, 1/2 mile to the nearest house, down a lane.

Number of visits from the Police = 0

I have spoken with three different farmers this week that have all admitted they sleep with a gun by their bed ,due to the shocking increase of crime in our area.

Is this just a local thing or becoming widespread ?

Are we about to get another Tony Martin case of shooting a burgler because the Police do fudge all about rural crime ?

So much crime is happening in the County where the Police have got CCTV, number plates and tracking device evidence, yet don't want to respond !
Our local crime whatsapp/email group are now reporting 2/3 things a day and its impossible to keep up. Certainly getting worse and there were few police before the pandemic.

If you move in a John Deere dealer next door, you will never be bothered by criminals again. It works on the same principal as those beer filled slug traps.
The groundsman at school used to sit up with a 12 bore loaded with salt to protect his sacred cricket pitch on the last night of term. That was back in the days of Tom Brown though.

In this matter, the number of police is pretty much irrelevant. What does matter is the determination of senior police officers to apply the law as it stands, and of politicians to back them up in so doing.

Everyone knows who is committing the crime, and that includes the police who, very often, even have the necessary evidence for successful convictions. But they are often both too physically and morally* scared to do much, and don't generally want the hassle of doing anything.

This will change, everything does, and there is a now a Home Secretary who has the right attitude in such matters. But then the detractors of Priti Patel, who so recently have complained of her doing too little in office, will then criticise her for being too overbearing.

*That meaning they are afraid of come-backs for racism / victimisation etc..

we are in the middle of a vendetta by an elderly lady, who has very obviously been prowling around the buildings, how serious it is going to get, I dread to think, its bad enough now. But, as a start, we have to install cctv, have to keep the yard 'locked'up, as far as possible, various signs, and a suggestion of keeping dogs there, to deter similar, allthough we have full and active support from all the 'agencies', we have been advised, to seek legal advice, bloody nightmare, and probably a good idea, not to keep a gun handy !

One of things that concerns us, as home on-line shopping grows, the number of delivery vans we get here. Some will be here when no one is around.

So far, we don't appear to have had anything nicked, but we think it is only a matter of time.

I have a hurling bat in the truck if necessary. Mostly use it to hit tennis balls for the dog.

I tend to rely on my maniac neighbour in the yard opposite for the local crime fighting though. A few years ago he ‘dealt with’ a couple of lads he found scouting out his yard. They did not return.

Our tractor was parked on a job overnight about 3 miles from home about 3 weeks ago. Turned up the next morning to find the cab vandalised. We found very distinct tyre marks leading to it, and even caught them on a trailcam used by one of the stalkers to pick up deer. Called it into police Scotland that morning, they logged it and told me a local officer would call back asap. 5 days later an officer wobbled into the office to take a statement. I showed him the photos of the vehicle and tyre marks on the field and said the tractor had been moved to the dealer to be repaired but that it would be available for fingerprints etc. He responded that he "might take a look at the tractor but there's nothing I can do with the photos as you never put a sign up warning of CCTV coverage". He never visited the tractor and I've not heard anything since.

It is this attitude by the police that leads to vigilantism. It is also exactly what lead to that poor copper being dragged down the road to his death.

I hope you are correct but I doubt it.

threatening social media, if she does, it immediately becomes harassment, and a police matter, but could really do without this shite, all been investigated, we are 'clean'.

I wouldn't wait for that. Get the CCTV in, gather evidence, apply for an injunction to stop her trespassing. If she doesn't stop then it's breach of the injunction and she ends up in court.

Or, get a pair of Presa Canarios and let them take care of business for you.

A friend of mine accidentally shot an intruder and accidentally reloaded and shot him again.
He did a year on remand before the trial at the same prison as the guy he shot (on remand for burglary).
He told the burglar that if he testified against him he would shoot him again and do it properly this time. You’d believe him wouldn’t you after he’s already had two goes.
He didn’t testify and my friend was out.

He should be weary about saying that openly and brazenly lol :D

Where you reach inside the garage door to open it from the outside. I have put a shelf with two Fenn traps on, both traps chained to the door. One just below the bolt and one just past it. Anyone groping round in the dark for the bolt is likely to set one or both off.

Found them both set off one morning, was disappointed not to find a finger left in either of them.
