Gypsum

Depends on the source and quality. Not aware of a limit to mined gypsum beyond depth of pocket. Different limits on recycled. I don't believe the paperwork is onerous or overly dear, especially if the stuff is very inexpensive.

I've always got mine through the folk who spread it. Saves the whining that goes with getting someone to spread a product they didn't supply. £15/t but that was a good few years back.

There are gypsum mines all over the UK.

Recycled plasterboard is sometimes on a PAS109 deployment which limits the dose rate to 1 t/ha without a permit but that doesn’t stop a grower ordering for 100ha and applying it to 10ha.

Edited to add - overdosing would be in breach of the PAS109 rules, so not allowed.

Second edit - Max 1 t/ha not 2 t/ha

Thought the limit was 1t/ha? IE a total waste of time.

Govt policy to recycle plasterboard, set a quality target at which point it ceases to be waste, then decide to limit spreading of this non-waste to uneconomical rates but offer a way to do it on payment of a fee. Sigh.

very limited, been told ammonium sulphate will do the same thing

Difference is the £/kg sulphur. Ton of gypsum at say £15 is a whole massive wodge of sulphur. If the land needs it, then consider recycled on the basis of an ea deployment organised by the supplier / spreader. It's not like your spreading liquidised monkey brains.

I checked my sales pamphlet. You're right:

2t/ha or a bit more is fairly standard for contractor spreading round here.
It's definitely cheaper for the recycled stuff than mined.
My guess it won't be around forever so we're getting it on while we can.
It's been put on in front of autumn cutlivation, autumn DD and also spring onto growing crops. No opinion on how best to manage the application
