Hand / Back sprayers

Location

I decided a couple of years ago to stop being a hero and lugging 20 (or was it 25?) kg around plus the weight of our old Cooper Pegler, which was undoubtedly a very good sprayer and long lasting, but heavy. In the end I bought a cheap 12l knapsack from Screwfix which cost the grand sum of £16.99 - and that's including the VAT. It basically gets used for Grazon and glyphosate. At that price I can cope with it not lasting more than a couple of years and it has already had heavy use - done 5 x 10l round the paddocks in the last week.

I’d recommend the Berthoud knapsacks over any other brand as they seem to have been designed with operator comfort and convenience in mind. I have two, one is 20 years old and never been an issue and the other is new. Being a known brand all parts are readily available as well should anything go wrong.

Do you have one & like it? Do you have to use special formulations of chemical & is the spray mix prone to drift.
I don’t own one but I used one of the early ones back in 1987 spraying round field headlands on a pre college farm. You just held it on your shoulder sloping in front of you. The chemicals are the same as normal but are less dilute so you are carrying less water around. The one I used would spray a meter wide band if you held it too high. The spray droplets are nearly invisible so you have to run it up the side of a post to see the pattern. The spray mix would be more prone to wind drift. The only issue I had with the one I used was corrosion in the battery compartment, because it had previously been left wet. Whether the newer ones are much different I’m not sure. It worked really well spraying a continuous band round the fields but would not have suited spot treating.
