Hand care

So now Autumn is here, how do you care for your hands?

Applies to most farmers, I do field veg & as I get older they seem to get more chapped in winter.

I may be doing it wrong but, Try to avoid washing hands, lots of neutragina hand cream when washed & always wear gloves.

I still have nasty cracks under my finger nails, will buy some germolin, new skin next time I'm near a chemist.

Stopped using liquid soap some time ago, gone back to using bar of soap for hand washing. My hands are nowhere near as dry and chapped as they used to be, was always slathering on vast quantities of hand cream on before, to no avail, presently using Wrights coal tar soap, old fashioned, but works well.

Try zero base, both as a soap and a topical treatment, also 50:50 ointment (white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin) as a bath/basin additive and moisturiser, night gloves mentioned above or bandage to cover Ichthammol 1%, Zinc oxide 15%, in yellow soft paraffin , don't go near a naked light, no joke.

Liquid soap is washing up liquid in a posh bottle. Shower gel is the same. Strips the skin of any oils which is what a detergent is supposed to do.

Yes, stopped using both and started using alternatives some time ago on medical advice. Reading the back of a washing up bottle can be quite a scary experience!

Dermashield barrier cream works for me. Keeps the skin from the wet/dry cycle that cracks them, and keeps any rotten lamb smells, oil, etc out.

Not cheap but a can lasts a long time.
Everytime.

And actually, it is cheap for the time it lasts... and try comparing it to the gloop that our Ladies buy at great expense. 500ml can suddenly seems like a bargain.

I will be ordering another 2 cans later today, as it happens.

O Keefe's for moisturising the hands after work, if needed. Use it mainly on wellyboot heel though!
