I assume that by a hand held post knocker you mean a steel tube, capped at one end and handles on the sides? What has been known in my family since my Grandfathers time as a 'Bomb' :)

If so there's no comparison to a sledgehammer type tools, the latter makes a terrible mess of posts, knocking chunks off, splits everywhere, the 'Bomb' knocks them in clean. Best with two people of course, but using it on your own sorts the men from the boys.....

Used to grow acres of stick beans and acres of raspberries. All the posts for the trellis work were knocked in by hand with a post knocked.
You soon learned how not to smack your head with it.

I’ve been using one, on and off, all my life. I’d never managed to knock myself out until I was ‘just knocking a couple of posts in’ one evening, aged 45.
Obviously I finished the job when I woke up, but gave Mrs NeilO a bit of a fright when I got in later on, having not even thought about the dried blood all over my head.?

Personally prefer a proper post hammer IME it’s easier but have done quite a bit of fencing by hand and once you get good with a hammer it’s easier than the metal tube ones “man killer” very rarely take chunks out of dry decent wooden posts always bar a hole and let gravity do the work

prefer the hammer for odd posts , BUT it needs to be a big one , i picked up a real heavy headed one at a car boot , two or three wollops and they are in with no splits , spent many years putting in horse fencing with the tube type good but hard work over a day ,

I’ll always take the mankiller to do a odd post, rather than pee about splitting posts with a sledgehammer.

You need a Mel, not a Sledgehammer.

To the op. buy a tractor post knocker. Yes it seems excessive but trust me, you'll wish you bought one 20 year ago. We got ours 2nd hand 12yr ago. It sits not doing much for long periods, but when there's repairs to do or a fence to go up you're glad you've got it! (the repairs actually get done!)

I mostly use a mel but when I'm feeling lazy, the tractor fore loader usually does the job. I have a frame on the quad for a swivel light for night shooting and a platform front and rear originally made to carry a heavy video camera (pro cameras were a two man job >20 years ago). I now use the rear platform to stand on to use the mel. It is at exactly the right height. Using a knocker would mean I wouldn't be able to drive in a post with wires still attached as most of my fencing will be repairs.

I agree on the post knocker. My Protech has paid for itself many times over, although I do tend to put a lot of stakes in with the Merlo now, where I can get at it.

Mankiller is only for odd stakes, when repairing normally.

Offt! To have ground soft enough to push posts in with the loader!!

I've split gate posts trying to go through the rock here :bag:
