Hard winter on the way?

Just had my best week ever selling logs with 22 loads out so far this week, so a lot of my customers must think we are in for a cold one
The timber guys either side of my yard are going mad with the loads!

I’m sure it’s all misremembered but I’m in my early 30s and all I remember from my youth is the odd covering of snow which quickly turned to slush.

Since 09 we have had multiple large snowfalls and much more seasonable winters. The front links on the tractor we bought 3 years ago have more than paid for themselves, purely through snowploughing.

read an article about this, apparently, if you put a plant/tree/bush under serious pressure, ie last years drought, it produces more 'reproductive' shoots, which will lead to it setting more 'reproductive' seeds etc for the following year (this), it's basically a survival strategy, and nothing to do a ensueing winter, this is a simplistic view of the article, as it contained contained long words that I can't remember, let alone spell
Someone should have told my apple trees this. My crop is pretty dire and I have heard of plenty similar.

I have found gavsweather (youtube) 6 months ahead and other forcasts broadly quite accurate, he saw that snow winter before last couple months ahead , and was spot on for this summer saying dry summer would break down in august (forcast last easter)
his take on this winter is mild till mid jan at least , iirc nov could be a colder month .
uses half a dozen main models (bejing climate centre and jap met agency are best )

Surely going to be a wet winter. We are only at 66%of rainfall for this time of year compared to the average and only 40% of average annual rainfall with just over 25% of the year remaining
Very different here, 520mm so far, since Jan 1, with an AV rainfall between 640-700 we don't much more.
Yorkshire water report all reservoirs between 95-100% full and all the local river have been up and down like a tarts kickers for the last 3 months so a wet winter is the last thing we need.
Different world north of York.

I'm pretty sure I had a social media post from The Sun about a -14 degrees beast from the east coming this January/February.. I just add these to the list of things that annoy me at this time of year.. like shops with Christmas decorations on the shelf in September, January Tax Return deadline reminder and CMS renewal..

We do need some rain here in Suffolk though, it's very dry.

I think the thing that interests me the most about that research paper is that the same sort of meteorological conditions may be evident this winter that were the case in the winter of 1962/3. So not that one should take the idea its definitely going to be a repeat of 1963, but that it is a possibility and perhaps one should take a few steps now to be ready if such an event did occur. After all I suspect the consequences of a 1963 type winter would be a far more dire today than 60 years ago - everything is so 'just in time' and reliant on everything working exactly as it should. There's no resilience built into people's lives any more. They have no food stored, they are totally reliant on the gas and power networks, no back up means of heating and cooking that people would still have had in 1963, with open fires and coal fired boilers and stoves. If communication and power networks were to significantly fail in a similar way to 1963 I think a lot of people would die as a result.
