Harder 750a discs

I really hope mine haven't worn out as the drill hasn't been delivered yet. I was just looking to get a cheap set in a group but whilst it was available

Ah ok well if you catch them right APM and Avenue sometimes get a bit desperate to sell stuff (ie 25% off etc) and catch them right and you may be able to get discs off them for about £25 each. Or you could get some old cross slot ones and plasma cut them down and grind a bevel on them.

look there are a heck of a aftermarket supplieers. Just found that one here:
Part # SH314190

Single disc opener blade, 18" diameter, .197" thick. Fits John Deere grain drills 750, 1560, 1565, 1590, 1690, 1835, 1850, 1860, 1890, 1895 and 1990.
Replaces John Deere No's N214190, N283804

Price:
$27.95 each;

I know that the price is not the end when you order more.
Friend used them on his JD750 & they seemed good.
I think if someone has the guts to place an order with >500 they will be made as a custom order. Just hand your specific requirements over. One of the things I'm involved regularly & resulting in always some gimmicks for & at Agritechnica & Christmas. :)

Can buy genuine JD for less in the U.K.

it was 24.50 last year on 250 and 29 this year if the group gets to 250 discs

local dealer on a stock order last set I had was 26

they really last ages though - saving £2/disc would be hardly measurable per acre

It's more than that though. For us starting with new discs at the beginning of autumn, by the time we get to the winter beans we want the discs to still be OK, and not really blunt. Only zero-tilled bit of beans struggled to penetrate enough. Better discs would have probably helped.

Clive,
look, as I have no personal interest in this I just quoted it.
I think that quite a lot now is attributed to a week pound. Even the € is low, as times with 1.3 US$ for a € are history. so it makes a difference when the exchange rate is now 1.03$ to the €.
I reckon we have actually in buying power a 1 to 1 ratio.

You are absolutely right that there are bigger influences on the success then the cheapest deal on buying. I sometimes wonder how much time farmers spend to save 100,-€, up to a day, and when it comes to other topics, like the front weight on the nex tractor a JD badged weight can't be put in front of the new Fendt. Just an example.
summarising in how much is your working hour worth to yourself. So some have spend hours on this topic to research, how much will they save?
Also next time you expect a top notch service from your dealer but at the same time you are not willing to share.
Sorry for getting off topic.

Have just measured our discs and they are now down to 17 inches. They have only done about 1700 ac before wearing out. This is a lot less than I was expecting, and means they won't even last a season. Will probably drill the 500ac of spring crops we have to drill with them like this because it's into cultivated ground. Hope that a harder disc emerges before too long.

2200 acres on set of discs.

Its about .63p acre. Touch dearer than you want it but not too bad.

The cost is not the worry, it's more a problem having worn discs when trying to drill beans or drilling into lots of residue. To avoid that you either end up changing too early, or you have to change them in the middle of a busy period which I definitely want to avoid.

Those last 500ac don't really count, because if I were zero-tilling I would want to change to a new set of discs. Really I was hoping that we could drill about 3000ac without changing which will be a season of use in a few years.

Talking to Exapta and Phil Needham today, they both are selling the Ingersoll discs as being harder wearing than the JD originals. Some Kansan no tillers joined in the discussion and agreed they got more wear from them. Make of that what you will. Phil did say that there are some harder ones still coming out of France shortly, which will be cheaper for us on the haulage.
