Harvest 2015 progress

Another good day, 38acs of beans (18%)and 37acs of linseed done today. Linseed is 10%and cutting great with brand new knife fitted. Got Another 14 acs of beans todo first, then move half a mile and 42 acs of linseed on same farm. Not sure if we will quite finish tomorrow. Then 12mile move to my own beans,44acs and that's the end!

Had a real doh moment fitting new knife. Dealer supplied during service but obviously not checked. I fitted it first thing and it was 2 m short!!! Have to say I was annoyed at the time but was laughing a hour and half later when the missing section arrived. Re fitted old knife and carried on with beans while I waited.

Feels odd to be still talking about harvest 2015. However, we have restarted for the first time in a while on spring beans. Yield pretty bad, but the plus side is we're racing through the acres. 110ac done between 3.30pm and 9pm. Only a day and a bit to go!

Any idea why haven't they started??

One place definitely not ready yet, barley still green in hollows, not sure about other place, barley looks good to go. Probably because his contractor will still be busy elsewhere.

Round up having little effect this year as I see it unless using a full rate.

Roundup here was very very slow despite using "soft" rainwater and wetter. Questioned my agro about it and he stated that the formulation has been changed this year. Using Flex from now on.

Which brand were you using? Now that the generic stuff is under £2/litre I can see how the manufacturers will want to cut costs. If it says 360 grammes of glyphosate per litre on the label then that's what it needs to have but the formulations where the safeners, wetters, buffering agents etc are added are the obvious target for cuts. If we need to spend a bit on adjuvants then so be it. Ammonium sulphate water conditioner is cheaper per litre than the glyphosate so I'm not going to lose much sleep over it.

360 used here, Hutch's own brand, did notice that the viscosity was noticeably different this year and did mention it to agro, he since found out that the formulations had changed. Used rain water as we are in a hard water area, never had problems before with it only this year found it very slow to work. 4+ weeks on occasion despite 3ltrs/ha, when I noticed it was slow I upped rate to 4ltrs/ha and no noticeable difference.

Does anybody know why the formulation has been changed this year??

Also does this mean it will take longer to work on stubble??

My agro did explain what and why it was changed but most of it was over my head, he spoke with the manufacturer stating my observations and got an answer.
I found it was fine on stubble with a decent rate but very slow on SB greetings in the tram lines and WW where slightly green under trees etc.

Finished here this evening, thank god. Spring beans which seem to have yielded surprising well & the combine didn't through its rotor drive belt today...... hopefully that season long persistent problem has been cured ??
