Have wages gone up since last year? I was only getting $25 an hour for spraying and sowing last year near Walgett.

I was getting $45 + GST ( VAT ) using my own ute & tools, for running a cotton stripper 2 years ago, west of Moree, but I DID do $1million worth of contracting in 4 months . . .

grain harvest wages have been $30 + for quite a while now. Does depend a bit on location, employer & experience, & wether accomodation, food etc is included

A group of this years Ag science graduates from Newcastle Uni recently all applied to go for harvest. The annual rite of passage. None could get Visas. Shame.
Australia had a golden opportunity to Vax while cases were low. Stupid, missed opportunity.

The travel bubble with NZ has been canned now too.
I think Kiwi's can still go there but need a 2 week stay in prison, sorry quarantine, when they get back and that's almost impossible to book at the moment. So going over there for a temp job isn't as attractive as you could be stuck there.

You can’t contain a virus ( highly contagious but of low/moderate virulence) in a global world, unless you isolate yourself from that world completely and indefinitely. A level epidemiology. The original point of lockdowns etc was to slow spread to avoid overwhelming the health system with the particularly susceptible. No one sensible thought you would ever stop it other than through threshold immunity. The UK strategy by either good luck or good management, or, a bit of both has shown to be the best approach. Of course it may mutate but so do all viruses and they generally attenuate for self preservation rather than increase in viru

Remind me what % of NZ GDP comes from agriculture and tourism please? It’s the trade off between keeping the population safe and damaging the economy. Over here where we had barely restricted international travellers, the virus has run riot but at least we are heading for herd immunity via laissez faire bio security.

Everyone is quick to forget that something like a million doses were diverted to Papua New Guinea to try to avert a humanitarian crisis. As it is they have one of the highest per capita rates of the rona.
Unlike the US (and Europeans) who stockpiled enough to do their entire population multiple times over, The Australian government, because of the fortunate geographical position we are in ,and EARLY border closures, were able to help out an impoverished neighbor that we are responsible for.

Vaccinations are pretty much the only thing we have done well at. We didn't close our borders, we didn't quarantine arrivals and worst of the lot the NHS knowingly sent positive cases into care homes.
Everyone is out clapping the NHS while they're busy killing our grandparents.
