Harvest job in Australia

Remind me what % of NZ GDP comes from agriculture and tourism please? It’s the trade off between keeping the population safe and damaging the economy. Over here where we had barely restricted international travellers, the virus has run riot but at least we are heading for herd immunity via laissez faire bio security.

Tourism used to be 5.8 % of GDP
Agriculture 5.1 %

Ag is around 79% of all exported produst from NZ

I was getting $45 + GST ( VAT ) using my own ute & tools, for running a cotton stripper 2 years ago, west of Moree, but I DID do $1million worth of contracting in 4 months . . .

grain harvest wages have been $30 + for quite a while now. Does depend a bit on location, employer & experience, & wether accomodation, food etc is included

Still not great compared to construction. I was getting $45 ABN then as an unlicensed electrician in Sydney with $600 worth of tools. Power tools supplied.

Miralwyn cotton give $25 across the board to all regardless of experience. Also charge $25 a day for food and accomadation. Have you heard of them?

yeah, I’m familiar with Miralwyn & Peter Harris.
My brother in law actually worked there as a mechanic not long after he finished his apprenticeship, back when Derek Williams was the Manager. He got sick of students / backpackers etc breaking gear all the time, so only stayed a year. That was 30 + years ago though . . .
Much more recently ( last year ) Peter Harris’s company was fined $250K for illegal access & pumping of water, as well as tampering with water meters on licensed pumps

yeah nah - irregardless of $/hr, I’d rather work for the Radford brothers myself

ScoMo has raised the drawbridge to Castle Australasia and the media have stoked up disinformation about the vaccines. He didn’t order enough jabs either. I can’t see them welcoming foreigners en masse anytime soon.

What do our Antipodean brethren think?
the Australian media has a lot to answer for a lot of people down here do not want to get the jab but want our borders open we seem to be really divided at the moment with many also saying they want hard borders no one coming or leaving and its getting worse not better the government has messed this up badly and the media just making it a lot worse than it needs to be

From what I can tell the aussy an kiwis had the right idea locking down the borders straight away if we did that wouldn’t be half the problems we had but like been said would been the time to get everyone jabbed

A backpacker is a term I grew to hate. I was there to work as hard and as well as I could.
I'd reckon that work ethic is from growing up working the land.

There's an ABC documentary which mentions Miralwyn directly in meter tampering but can't find link now.

That may be so. But the ABC is to left.... The truth lies somewhere in between.

Considering that Shari Markson did an investigative story on the Wuhan viral military lab 8 months before it was finally accepted (also months after Trump claimed that's where it originated from as well) says a fair bit about how left leaning and equally (if not more so) biased main stream media is.

I've given up watching all of it tbh.
Just watch YouTube now.

Fair play if they can get away with it.

I only met Peter once, he came along and we changed the engine oil on an 8310R together in the field. Very nice man and you wouldn't have any idea he was worth hundreds of millions

Is that the same Peter Harris who owns Moomin, near Rowena, Moree? I worked for him in 2001-2002, breaking his gear… he sponsored me to stay on beyond my working holiday visa.

The scale of environmental destruction by bush clearance is quite extraordinary in Australia. I have seen it in quite a few places over there.
The very biggest I saw was just North of Perth where they were building a whole new suburb, amongst it was an animal sanctuary with koalas and kangaroos which were almost certainly displaced when the bush was cleared. Absolutely staggering as that was the only place any locals were ever going to see them, all as a result of their new house and new shopping centre. Not for me to be judgemental from the other side of the world but it did feel quite wrong and immoral.
The other place I saw it was QLD, the government had announced there was to be no more clearance after a certain date, the obvious result was the farmers went out and cleared the lot immediately.
Lots of passion about these things, Roy shows a lot in his posts but at the end of the day he too is farming cleared land, as I am too of course.

Did you drop the oil on the ground!?

I worked near walgett and mechanic came out to change the engine oil on the versatile I was driving. Just took bung out and let oil run onto ground in field I was working! 🤦‍♂️

I enjoyed bush clearance, farmer I worked for had a big CAT loading shovel. If we ever had a quiet time we used to go and rip trees out.

I'm a bit basic though. Saved me driving round them with seeder and sprayer.
