Don't think so.

The swath out of the rotary is just more dense.

Where do you think it's gone? Why would there be double the straw out the back of the straw walker combine with 10ft less header width?

Our straw is 5x the length of the other. The baler is going to pick up more long straw than short stuff I would have thought. Also we get a lot more bales.

Interesting. We run a rotary but i have never baled behind rotary and walker machines in same field.

The straw is as important as barley to us. We would definitely not run a rotary if we thought we had 50% less straw as a result.

@AndrewB You run straw walker and rotary combines if I remember correctly. What do you find?

Finished OSR yesterday, into some Planet today.
Was a bit surprised at 13.5 % mc as it's got green tramlines and tillers, but it's really nice to cut Spring Barley and not see ears laying on the ground !!
The chalk has done it's stuff again as yields are pretty good..

picture from yesterday ( first day of harvest)
18ft straw walker on left 25ft rotary on right.

the only disadvantage is if bouts get wet they take a lot more time and effort to dry behind rotary.
Generally we don’t get the very dry harvests up here where straw smashes up.

Rotary combine swaths are definitely more broken and take longer to dry out. I sympathise with straw consumers who don’t put the bales through a chopper and want a nice loose bed in the sheds. A nice narrow swath behind a combine bigger than 30’ is very tall and you need good grain cart drivers to avoid knocking them about. And the right length combine spout!
