Made a start on the last field of december drilled wheat after beet.
Considering its december drilled, on light reclaimed land I'm gobsmacked.
It's too early to know what its yielding but if theres as much grain as there is straw then itll do bloody well.View attachment 900511View attachment 900512View attachment 900513
Dd reckons it's nice to be cutting something with some moisture in it, this is at 14 the rest has been between 10 and 13%.
What was the land like before it was reclaimed?

Finished wheat at home. Near as dammit 2.7 ton acre
And 9 acre drilled mid feb. 🤦‍♂️ We have left will take pics of it. All gone black. And lots blank ears. Might get a combine tank full.
cutting at Downham on the black and silt Monterey

18 ha after spuds 10,6 t ha
19 after beet 10.1.
In a 9 ha then 7 of fire fly for seed.

Like what it is in the back ground, birch, alder, and gorse with pit holes(pingos)
Grandad bought dad a cat D4 back in the 70s as a young man they set to and reclaimed it. Got a drainage grant and then pushed the good soil out of the lows put the sand from the hills in the bottom and then grade the decent stuff over the top. If you plough deep for beet you turn out yellow sand.

Incredible to think in a world where we are paid to leave land to go wild that not too long ago they paid money to bring it into agriculture.

Who knows.....at some point it may come full circle again!

Nobody would have thought back then that it would be as it is now......so if we think it's unlikely to go back to that we could be just as incorrect.

Dad said exactly the same today, we have a mad aunt who's just gifted 100 odd acres of great grandads farm to the wildlife trust🤦‍♂️[emoji26] and they intend to re wild it. He recons my boys will see it returned to ag once again.

I spent the morning spraying the S Barley with Glypho and due to he thickness of the crop, I got quite a bit on the soil as well 🙄
My year of Spring establishment trials so far ( from the sprayer ) has found no difference in how the crop looks between DD and reduced Tillage. They all look crap and 5t/ha will be a shock, 3t/ha may be the reality 🙄

I cant help it. I haven't seen any wheat around here that's got any black ears, some years it looks horrible even from the road.

Final tally counting the trailer which carts 16 to 16.5 ton into the mill as 15 ton and it's done 3 ton/acre. FSS off the heap, 180 units of urea, cheapo BLW spray and two fungicides. I'm well happy with that.

@flat10 did you give your wheat with black ears a t3??? Mine had a combined head and shoulders of 1lt ascra.

I know you can’t. I is jealous. Similar fungicide approach. The damage was done by then.

My very late drilled winter wheat on sand that died off early will be hardly worth harvesting if hand rubbed ears are anything to go by. I am disappointed as Crispin did well here on the sand last year. Different variety this year, but won’t name it as it is more the spring drought wot did for it. Mostly very small shrivelled grains.
Spring barley looks like it will be slightly below average for here. Doesn’t look too bad at all considering, but Westminster (feed) always stands better than Planet here, although Planet seems to take off faster and be less stressy in a dry spring.
Can’t wait to get everything cleared and back to a clean sheet/ the drawing board.

Better or worse to come? 6t isn't bad if this was the stuff that was dead. Cover crop going in behind this?

not much better to look forward to sadly - might find a bit slightly better but i think some will be worse

there is no much that looks a lot better in this area at all

this is the reality of harvest 2020 sadly

we have managed it well though - spend is low and as in my Direct Driller article last month i still plan to make a profit this year

120kgs N and x1 ctl / teb / £20 ha herbicides and farm saved seed / zerotill

no regrets, just weather!

yes cover crop will go in tomorrow

I’d be pleased with 6t this year. Busted a gut here trying to get crops in and nursing them but the weather just went wrong at every stage. We would have been better off not bothering with the wheat but you drill in hope. This year we were unlucky.
Its a lesson to us if this is going to be the pattern. Play it safer. More spring barley, less chance of a big income but a better average on light land with weather extremes.
