Some people were going into our village post office without masks yesterday. My wife asked why they were being served and the reply was that the staff were not allowed to refuse service. What a farce. These people were not only being disrespectful to the staff but other customers as well.

Took the kids out on Monday morning briefly to Clarks Village and the town, about 50% of people wearing masks and a peculiar one-way system in effect so people were kept from having to walk near each other. Thing that pished me off was that they shut the kiddies play park there whereas the council had opened all the local playparks.

As I walked around and saw all the old folks out enjoying the sun and pedestrianised street and market right up the middle of the road, I kept thinking I was glad of my mask as I would hate to think I was infecting all these elderly folk tho can least afford to catch it. I had a lot of pity for the bank and shop staff, too knowing that it would be they who were in the line for complaints for making people wear them or, conversely, having to refuse entry and receiving abuse as a result.

You need only look at the statistics on google to see that these number of respective Covid cases and deaths are highly dubious when comparing countries.

For example, the global number of Covid-19 cases is around 15.7 million. The total number of deaths is put at 640,000. So the overall, no-nonsense crude mortality rate is about 4.07%.

Using the same statistics for the UK, 298,000 cases, and 45677 deaths. Giving an approximate crude mortality rate of 15.33%.

These numbers being reported should be taken with a big dose of salt.

I'm not a right wing freedom vigilante by any means, and I'm not concerned about any freedom issues, but I think all this fuss about masks is rather overblown. These home made masks are only going to catch spots of spittle basically, which will have landed within a few feet anyway. And we shouldn't be standing that close to strangers. The micro particle aerosols they will do absolutely nothing to arrest. Ventilation is the only way to remove those as a source of risk to others, and general low density e.g. Controlling numbers in an indoor space at any one time.

So I think the fuss about masks is like the lockdown - yet another means by which politicians can hide behind and say they did everything they could have, when the disease takes it course anyway. Again, no lockdown in Sweden, no face coverings anywhere, and a similar trajectory of infections.

What you misunderstand is that basically you will not find free floating virus hanging about. It will only be exhaled on droplets of spit and this is what a mask easily catches by the maze effect. This means that droplets will try and travel straight and not this way and that round the threads. They thus attach themselves to the thread hygroscopically. A mask does not need to catch everything either to have a marked effect, just taking out 80% will drastically reduce the chances cross infection , partly due to lower virus loading, would answer more but being called away
