He is not a fly by night, he has been a established straw trader for a long time. While I agree £100 + delivered is a lot of money, I think it will still be demand. Don't think cattle and pig farmers will use shavings, wood chip etc. Some livestock farmers will always use straw. We sold barley straw off the field for £45 which we were pleased with.

I think your merchant is getting carried away, he may offer to buy it at that price but he might not sell it! he is £30t over the current market value off farm.

Once straw gets to £100t delivered on farm livestock farmers wont buy it, that was proved last year down here in the SW.
rubbish.

Don't you mean bullocks. They love straw.
If a straw merchant told you he would give you £60-£80, would you tell him that seems expensive, you can have it cheaper!
He wouldn't quote us a price if he knew he couldn't sell it on.

Happened down here last spring, Barley went from £85t delivered in to £105t in Feb, merchants quoting shortages,,, farmers stopped buying for a few weeks and the market had no option but to drop back to £85t again.

Take your cake, say the feed co turned around tomorrow and said we are putting cake upto £400t what would happen?? sales would crash and straw is no different.

Plenty of alternatives to use if needs be or turn the cattle out onto stubbles etc..

Yep he would if he is trying to secure what he wants, could then turn around 4 months time and say he cant sell it at that price so can only pay £50t off farm instead of £80 etc etc.

Fair enough.....but if the merchant is happy with £80, and the grower is happy with £80.....
