On our poor land we average around 10 bales grass or 2.5 tons of wheat with irrigation so with wheat at £150 £375/acre equates to me selling mini hesston 5ft bale for £40 delivered so this means a bale will need to be £70 upwards to be worth while. what do others think.

Wheat prices had already started rising before all this kicked off world stocks are running tight. Bet politicians regret not having grain mountains now.
I do not think UK politicians care one iota about having a reserve of grain in stock.

One of the main UK supermarket CEO's had a meeting with Boris the other day, told Boris the UK will very likely be very short of food by this time next year at the latest, Boris just smirked then laughed, the CEO repeated his comments and Boris just stood there laughing at him..

What the hell can you do with a PM of a country like that??

I wonder how this lot are fairing, are John Deere breaking US sanctions? Got to be all sorts of pressure being applied.
I imagine the likes of international company's will find a way around these sanctions sooner or later, possible by selling the parts etc to country's like China who then sell/ ship them straight into Russia the next day.

I drove through a lot of marginal farmland today in USA, the legend of $65 small square bales a couple winters ago made a lot of this ground get hayed for the first time in years, now $8 corn makes a lot of it plowed. They're praying for a drought, because corn will drown without one. Or most likely, won't get planted to corn without a drought, just go back into better hay.

Plenty of moisture in the eastern prairies now fir seeding time. An hour west of here had two feet of snow end of last ween. That’s on top of the above average winter snowpack. red river valley will be a late start this year. Barely hitting zero this coming week and snow at times too. Usually getting close to starting getting wheat planted but it’s a good three weeks away. Yields will be down for sure with delayed seeding.

I don't know who Frank is but he's not clueless. Ukraine normally produces 16 million hectares of grain and their government has reported over 14 million has been planted. Granted it's a drop, but the vast majority is still in the ground.

Fodder prices are tricky, most of my business is fodder, supply both livestock and horses. Last year's prices for hay/haylage were £30 for individual bales and £25 for bulk orders. Round bales, 4ft.

This year is going to have to be £5 more, at least, just in diesel and plastic wrap increases. But may have to go up more

Folk definitely have the money tho as nearby me theres a guy selling the same bales for £50 last year to horsey people.

It may seem a good idea to rip up grassland to plant wheat but that's a lot of money tied up in diesel, seed etc when there's a potential crop just sitting there. But farmings always going to be different for each farmer so whatever works for you works. Just saying £600+ for spring seed put me right off planting more acres this spring.

Also if the fodders good quality then perhaps it's a better investment than grain. For example if I'm selling you good, high protein clover or Lucerne haylage. It's got a great feed potential and my prices have gone up by £5 per 500kg bale (£10 more per ton). Feed grain is easily £100 more per ton. I've got plenty of customers who finish on forage and horse customers with "working horses" who don't use bagged feed
