Hay making 2022

Fair few have been caught by the price drop in hay since they agreed to take the fields and they do not have barns to store it in. Folks kept on in the spring that low fert usage would see poor yields and shortages of fodder etc so they gave too much for the grass. Better take £2 now and been done with it than rent a barn and take £2 later

f**king shower of rain here this morning that wasn't even enough to damp the dust down but enough to stop me baling hay 😒
I wouldn't mind if it pee'd down and was enough to grow some grass but literally all its done is make the sun go away. Looks like I'll be back on it tomorrow though looking at the forecast so I'm putting my loader tractor back together now all the parts have arrived.

Last few bales out of 274.
Starting to spot with rain, but think stop. Clouds emptied before they got to us.

Any tips on knowing when Lucerne hay is fit ?
It’s not the sort of crop you can keep turning, if you want anything of value to bale ! Does it read the same on a moisture meter as no?

Give a handful a few twists. If it snaps and doesn't feel sticky i find it ok. Stuff cut last Sunday was baled Saturday morning but could have been done day before but I was elsewhere. tested in microwave wednesday at 25-30%

We are done a month sooner than last year, but about 900 round bales down on same acreage. Cold Spring winds hampered us. Had some left from last year and brought in some conventional bales at 3.50 delivered as at that money it's not worth doing them ourselves. Put the round baler in the last bit instead so we should be ok now

Due to the crazy price of plastic and the scorching English summer our bale wrapper is still tucked up in it's winter lodgings in the back of the shed.

Baled the last 40 acres of the hay campaign yesterday for our neighbour.
His daughter is getting married on Saturday and she asked me if I'd wrap one bale as she wants one for 'a feature' at the reception (no idea what she's going to do with it :scratchhead: )

Rather than drag the HS 2000 out and then have to weedle it back into that awkward spot in the back of the shed, I decided there must be a quicker way......

Got the job done 👍.....

......but wouldn't fancy tackling a field full :inpain:
