Haybob speed

Got thinking yesterday what speeds as in pto speed and ground speed do people think is correct for a haybob?
There aren't set speeds, they depend on whether you're tedding or rowing, how dry the grass is and how much of it there is. Setting and operating a haybob is one of those things that you've either got it or you haven't and most haven't.

I've just been tedding out a light crop, had the mf35 doing nearly 2100rpm.
540pto speed is at about 1800rpm on the clock.

Just alter the revs until it's doing a job.

I have seen many folk use a haybob to thrash their hay to death. Treat it gently especially if you got a lot of clover. The Lely Haymaid was a better tool for hay, but was a bit fragile. It would Ted out well at low rotor speed as well as row up,

Massey 135 in 2nd High Multi Power @ 1700 erpm and you are batting along nicely at about 9mph and doing a good 9 acres an hour whether tedding out or rowing up a treat.

Having said that the Lely 770 we now have for tedding will do 20 acres an hour and scatter much better than a Haybob.

But for rowing up in front of a small baler the Haybob beats a rake 100% every time by making light fluffy windrows rather than the dragged up things than the purpose built rake makes. For making big rows for the round baler however the rake we have bought is quicker and better.

If you have a small acreage a well set up Haybob is a superb machine for tedding and rowing up. Those that slag it off obviously don’t know how to set it up properly for different jobs. A bad workman blames the tools.

I tend to put the pto into 540, high second gear and set the revs to about 1500. Don't know the forward speed but I can't go any faster unless I want to be shaken to pieces.

Dad runs the pto in 1000.
