Headlights won’t switch off - John Deere 6520

Hello everyone,

Long story short, we had an incident with someone messing with the wires on our John Deere 6520. We had the mechanics from our dealership round to try and fix the damage caused. I’m unsure as to what damage was done or what fixes they tried, but we are left with our headlights constantly on. The light switch does not turn it off, turning the engine off does not turn them off either. We have to unplug them.

I know this is very vague, but does anyone know what I should look for to diagnose and fix this? All lights besides the headlights work perfectly fine.

Feel free to ask any questions and I’ll try to answer them. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve not got the diagram in front of me but I’d start be checking the relay isn’t stuck, your operators manual will give the locations. There’s also two sections for the light fuses again I’ve not got the diagram in front of me but I think it’s “EEC” and “ECE” only one lot of fuse holders (I think ECE) should be used. If the wrong ones are used or both It makes the lights stay on and do funny things.

Please, please check your operators manual before swapping any fuses or relays around other wise you can end up in a real mess! Some look like relays but they are diode blocks, don’t get them mixed up.

It’s not full beam, I’ve just tested the flash to pass and that doesn’t appear to work on the headlights

Thanks for that, I’ll have a look and get back to you

There are different fuse & relay positions depending on market and transmission option, so check the fuse box very carefully against the correct diagram in the manual. Start here. What wiring was tampered with do you know ?

I’ve checked the relays in the fuse box and they appear to be okay.

I believe it was the ignition they tampered with but I can’t be sure that’s all they touched. When the mechanics came round to look at it, the tractor wouldn’t start at all, I believe they spent a lot of time with the ignition to the point where the tractor started up and moved. What we’re are left with now is headlights that don’t turn off.

Any damage to the lights switch or wiring at the column ???

I did notice some cosmetic damage on both of those, I’ll open them up and have a look.
I didn’t notice anything that looked off. I decided to check the ignition and saw this. Does this have anything to do with it?

is it a premium or SE cab? If it’s premium, the wiring to the headlight Switch can get snagged as the steering column extends and retracts. If it’s been taken apart and put back wrong the wires can easily get crushed in there and be damaged... worth a look but it can be fiddly getting apart/back together...

It’s a SE I believe, is this still something worth looking at?

Hey, Anyone get to the bottom of this? I have a 6620 with headlights that wont turn off. Tried light switch (lights still on), and removed every single relay behind the seat individually. No joy. Are there relays hidden somewhere else on this?

Won’t be a relay it will be a fuse in the wrong slot. There’s 3 ece and 3 eec slots (I think) I can’t remember which way round it is now but only 1 lot o the 3 should be used not all of them.

Had a light related issue on a 7280R different beast I know, but it turned out to be an overheated & perished wiring loom. Not sure whether the 6020 series have can-bus wiring, but if checking obvious fuses, switches etc doesn’t throw any light (excuse the pun) on it start checking wiring looms.
