Heads-up for falling soil temperatures late February?

Hi all,

Just a quick 'heads-up' for you as we get closer to spring.

There have been consistent indications that temperatures may slip in the second half of February (those of you who are Weatherweb Premium members know I've been on about the possibility of this for some time) as a brief hit of winter weather may arrive in the UK. For now I'm thinking 'cooler' rather than 'cold'.

This could have an impact on soil temperatures which will probably rise in the next few days.

However, by the end of the month they may fall again. Here's how the CFS model sees 0-10cm soil temperatures in the final week of February. They rise again the week after so any cold probably doesn't last long.

Of course, this is long range and so anything could happen but probably worth bearing in mind as you make your early season plans.

Keep the sun shining!

Regarding my statement "soil temperatures which will probably rise in the next few days" here are the 10cm soil temperatures for Harpenden.

You'll note the rise in temperatures following my posting on 30th January. As we now enter a colder spell for a few days these are likely to fall again.

And just to stress again "Of course, this is long range and so anything could happen but probably worth bearing in mind as you make your early season plans."

Not sure where this weather station is But surely as far as crops and grass growth is concerned your chart is showing a soil temperature rise of around 8 degrees over a few days. That surely can not be correct? Can it?

I bought a soil thermometer at a garden centre while visiting the in laws last year during a brief escape from front room fever.

It worked well till mother ran the mower over it.

Looks like the probe has come out of the ground.
