Heat loss up the chimney

Have a large open fireplace in one of our rooms, with a chimney a teenager would have no bother sweeping. Not often lit.How much heat will disappear up the spout due to the natural draw of a tall chimney?Just wondering if I should be blanking the thing off, possibly with one of those glass fire fronts so it can still be used.

Yes but you are going to need a space hopper sized balloon for a big chimney :D
Block it off somehow, not only is the heat going up but it will be dragging icy cold fresh air into the house.

Be careful how you reduce it if you intend to light it in the future, or you will curtail the draw so much it is likely to just make it constantly blow back.

I was told by a friend who sells wood burners and the like, that an open fire is around 15% efficient. Whereas a wood burner is closer to 65%. Only downside Is you need a metal flew, it must be signed off by a professional ( which cost a small fortune ) and you cant burn wet wood as it will block the chimney and cause a chimney fire!

Maybe supposed to be signed of but when we had the rayburn put in 5 years ago ,the builder put the flue pipe down and the plumber connected it up ,,no paper work ,neither were hestas registered ,,chimney sweep has never left a certificate to say its been cleaned
