Heathrow

There's an acid test that we should all apply to our decision making: This thing I am about to do, what would happen if everyone did it ?
Can the natural environment stand 9 billion, or whatever it is, jet setting here there and everywhere ? Because I don't think that it can.

The planet can't stand 9 billion of us using electronic devices to communicate over the internet. If you truly believe in your acid test, you should lead by example and switch off that, plus most other aspects of UK middle class life that you currently enjoy.

In past life, my career required me to fly through Heathrow twice weekly as part of a significant environmental project that needed my input. Was that ideal? - No, but on balance it was acceptable.

Leisure travel is more difficult to justify though, agreed.

It's refurbed from a charity and the electric is Ecotricity, but yes, of course, we're all complicit I wouldn't pretend otherwise. I'm happy to lend you my air miles if it was an eco project, my passport expired a long time ago.
Do I really think we should turn Heathrow into a market garden ? Yes I do.

Huge opportunity for UK ag today. 12 hours solid media coverage of how we are impacting the environment. Open goal for us to promote eating British as a practical way for everyone to do their bit.
Anyone heard anything from our lot ?
I've just checked fb:
NFU, NSA, NBA: No posts today.
NFU education page: Last post 12 March.
AHDB 'we eat balanced' public awareness page: Last post 22 June.
Soil Association: At least they are all over it, but instead of going with 'eat local' they have stuck the boot into 'intensive'.

I can't be bothered with angry, will just go with sad at how useless we are.
You missed TFF….😂

Yes, they are trying to build a third runway. Like it or lump it, the world has a need for connectivity and travel.
Surely now we are used to Zoom / Teams etc there is no need for executives having jollies going halfway across the world for meetings. If one good thing comes out of the pandemic this should be it

People don’t just go for work “jollies” around the world, they go to do actual work too. Work trips get very tedious, very fast and I would never voluntarily travel beyond my driveway for a meeting, but sometimes Zoom and Teams are just not good enough - you can’t pick up the body language cues, and you can’t discuss sensitive information, at the least.

So yes, no jollies, but there weren’t very many of those before anyway.

By my maths one person flying to Spain will use approx. 52 litres of fuel, so approx. 200 litres for a family of four, not sure how much a Range Rover with four on board would use from London to Cornwall but possibly not much difference and an awful lot of Range Rovers do the trip on a weekly basis.

I did the sums when I was regularly travelling on (UK) internal flights, and there were far fewer emissions from flying than from driving, plus I had an extra day or so of productivity and supported the employment of a chunk of airline and airport workers.

It would be at least double that (Flying is about 50mpg per passenger and Spain is 1000 miles away) The biggest crime is Range rovers doing large distances with only one passenger. No business men ever pick up hitch hikers to reduce their carbon footprint.

Here are my workings (figures from google) A 737 burns 3400 litres an hour so a 2.5 hour flight uses 8500 litres, divide that by 162 passengers = 52.49 litres of fuel per passenger.
