Heavy duty tyre on standard rim

Help please, ive bought a tyre to replace one on our Ritchie cook bale sledge.

It's exactly the same as the one on the other side.

Have tried two tyre fitters and both say it can't be put on a standard rim and needs to go on a split rim.

How is this the case if the original and existing tyre is the same and on a standard rim?

It's a 5.00-8 10 ply rating

Both have said I need to get one with a lower ply rating

If one came off another will go back on. Maybe your tyre fitters won’t fit it because it needs hand fitting with tyre levers, due to the ply rating and they are worried about damage.

Personally I would have a go at fitting it myself and buy a set of tyre levers if need be. I actually ground down 2 old crow bars and use those

Will give it a go, we do have tyre leavers but gave up doing our own tyres after spending far too long on one and hurting our backs, we decided it was better to just pay someone in future as we are not really up to it anymore

Have a go, let us know how you get on,
2 reasons why tyre fitter won't fit it,
1 it is to strong a tyre for the rim, therefore risk of accident, due to weak rim with to much pressure
2 it will be a basteward to get on, due to strength in side wall trying to get the tube in,
Them little tyres have no room for hands and are harder to fit than a big tractor tyre,

Good luck

I would say these are 2 good reasons not to attempt fitting by hand

I have just looked again at the picture of tyre and I would say it is over done for a flat 8 sledge..... could these be ex military tyres bought in big quantity very cheap by Ritchie

The tyre is built for heavy load and high pressure (50-70psi) hence the strength of the walls and ply rating. You say it is the same as one on the other side, if so, someone managed to get it on the rim.

You only have to inflate enough for the load required, its a max 15mph so not really a road spec tyre.

Should be really good at not puncturing, ideal for a wheel barrow.

Thanks everyone, I can't get the barsteward on with tyre leavers but I'm a bit of a wimp and dad (aka the gorilla) is out of action for about 6 weeks.

Will have to go back to old browns sledge for now

The 2 tyre fitters between them have fitted many thousands of tyres ranging from haybob size up to 6 wheeler massive dumper truck so if they said it can't be done that's it!!
