No one charges by the hour for baling, etc. so why can't you charge by the metre/kilometre run? I did it that way for years. You cut at say 3km/hr, just divide your hourly rate by 3-simple. Come to that, why not charge a price per job? Tell the farmer you'll cut all his hedges, top & sides for X pounds.

As for a contractor charging bargain basement prices, perhaps he takes the view that he's got the kit anyway so 500 hrs @ £15/hr equals £7,500 whereas zero hours @ £30 equals feck all. Actually less than feck all as he'd have to service an overdraft & living expenses with no income

There will always be the super cheap brigade. Mostly though they either go bust, are unreliable or do a poor job. Been doing hedgecutting for 16 years, and despite being dearer than most margins are tight. No fancy tractor or trimmer, lots of hours to get economies of scale (ie concentrating on it as a primary earner, not as part time) & greasing religiously. Also doing a dam fine job to the best of your ability as swiftly as you can. I know another contractor who does it as a ‘loss leader’ to keep wheels turning for £20/hour on a 6155r & £25000 trimmer. Wtf??????? :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: What is the point?
seems big power on hedge cutters in north wales regularly see likes of jd 7530 or fendt on hedge trimmer !

The thing is, not everyone has a tractor to suit every job, these big tractors might be sat on big drills, trailers, cultivators and ploughs and god knows what else, so it may be their only choice for it to sit on a hedge trimmer for a few weeks.

Visibility and stability will probably be better and it would be a nicer place to spend a long day than some ratty old junk just used to sit on a hedge trimmer.

When I was contracting in a big way I would if I had to have put a hedgecutter on a tractor to keep my best man for the winter once it didn't cost me money even if 30 per hour once it covered all costs I would have been happy today it's different I have a son and we don't work any machine for less than 50 per hour which includes a 13 ton digger
