Hedge plants stolen

We've had about 120 quickthorn plants / canes / spiral guards stolen recently from a newly planted hedge on a roadside. Has anyone else experienced this. Thieves know they are there now but would removing the canes and spirals make them less attractive to the thieves

Cow slurry or chicken muck might discourage. Use a glove liberally coated in grease on the spiral tubes once in place might help. If really desperate plant them then cut the plants short so they are less visible, without using canes and tubes. Hedge would have a thicker base doing this but they would be competing with weeds more.

Think we will try removing canes and tubes. Cutting at half height might be a good idea and let them take their chances against the grass. Cutting off at half height would certainly make them less attractive to thieves. Losing 100 or so is very annoying but theres another 3000 for them to go at.

ok in an effort to redeem myself  .....during a quick flick round lambing shed i came up with coupla ideas....1/ bitta sheep marker on tubes....may rub off on thieves...bit expensive but quick(y).....or...2/ some grease thinned a little with engine oil dabbed on tubes with brush?,,,,slow and careful not to get on plants but more of a detterent perhaps?:scratchhead:

Amazesd me people would steal them as pulling them up would seriously damage the roots. I always cut the canes and guards in half as otherwise you get a gappy hedge at the base. I'm considering planting without canes or spirals as there rnt many rabbits about and it'll make the hedge much cheaper. I never spray or mow the grass growing round the hedge as I think it can help shade and protect the new plants, the only time I ever spot spray round them is to kill brambles as they can swamp the hedge.
