Don't plant any blackthorn!

I don`t understand why you dislike Blackthorn? We have used it as at about 5% in mainly hawthorn hedge plantings and it is a little bit different, flowers earlier and is just a nice addition to the mix.

and in 5 years time the suckers a 5 m out into the field, in 20 years time the hedge is 12m into the field.

There is mature Blackthorn in old hedgerows in lots of places and I don`t think i really seen that happen

Are you sure that it is blackthorn then, mine spreads terribly.

There was blackthorn planted as part of mixed hedgerow in a number of places and I have also planted just blackthorn to fill in gaps of mainly hawthorn hedges. It just seems to be a normal hedgerow plant with white flowers which appear full on in maybe mid April before the green leaf appears. My Dad reckoned the distinctive white flowers appearing in otherwise bare hedgerows often coincided with a spell of chilly weather in spring which he used to refer to as a blackthorn winter.

Blackthorn is not as hardy as hawthorn, over 1000' the Blackthorn hardly grows (or dies out), where as the Quickthorn does continue to grow (if slowly!).
