Have you tried saving the attachment and opening it from where you saved it - rather than opening it from within the email - to see if the same error occurs?

Is the pdf already open in adobe?
or have you another file already open, if so you need to close that, and then try, right click - open with - (whatever program you use to open)

Can you post a screen shot of the error, if you save the word file to your desktop and then double click to open it from there.

I know. That first pic is an Outlook error dialog because there’s a permission fault with the default temporary directory it uses when opening attachments.

You shouldn’t have a permissions error if saving the file to a different location e.g your desktop and opening it from there.

That’s what I’m trying to get at - is it an attachment issue, an Outlook issue with Windows or a wider windows permission error.

Okay, although the error message is claiming a permissions error on the folder where the attachments are stored temporarily, it is more than likely that the temp folder is full.
You could try clearing out the temp folder.

Tried emptying the temp folder using one of the free tools on website, but still will not open attachment

have you tried to save it just to the My Documents folder instead of the Automatically chosen folder location that Windows normally does...? can you send a screen shot of the attachment within its original email location like attached as an example...??

Sent the email to my Gmail account, and attachment opened ok

It could actually be an outlook security setting, it is a lot more strict now with all phishing, malware and viruses that can be attached/embedded into attachments.. we have it all the time [emoji28]

The other more extreme alternative, would be to backup your outlook data file(s). Uninstall outlook. Reboot the machine and reinstall outlook from scratch.

if you are trying to open a doc in Microsoft office you need to down load Microsoft office compatibility viewer (free). with microsoft office it is not forwards compatible, ie, if you have office 2010 and someone sends you a doc made on office 2015 for example you might not be able to open it, so the compatibility viewer fixes this. it is a genuine Microsoft download, it is not very big and it is free.

While all this is true, in this case it was nothing to do with version incompatibility with Word. It was purely Outlook screwing things up, that's why it opened ok using a different email client.
