HELP. What am I doing wrong. Spool valve issues

Just cannot easily couple anything to any of the spools. x2 DA quick release spools on a 63 plate MF 5410, 1 of which is linked to Dramone Hitch too. It doesn't matter what I do it is impossible to just pop in a coupler to any of the 4 slots. The only way I can do it is to turn off the engine and get a punch and whack the tit in the middle of one of them to release any pressure and then it will work. Surely I am doing something wrong as I have never had this issue on any other tractor. Normally just reverse up and pop the coupler in and away to go.

Happy to be shown to be a numpty if there is a simple trick.

Have you tried turning engine off amd working spools to release pressure, or if possible put them into float while you plug pipes in?

Think only one of them has float. I will try it though. Working spools doesn't seem to do anything but iwll give it an other go (go to go back and hitch trailer on as I had to leave it down the field)

Is there pressure on the implement side - i.e. The trailer?

No pressure on the trailer side. I can press the tit in with light finger pressure. I can also move the tit on the tractor side by pushing it by hand with a flat punch but this won't releive the pressure enough to get the coupler in. If I give the punch a sharp tap then there will be a massive squirt of fluid and then it works. I have just tried working the spools before trying and resting the one spool in float and it didn't help at all. The only way to get pressure off the spools appears to be whacking them. This can't be right though.

Had a mate come and borrow some discs a couple of years ago and we had to loosen pipes on the tractor to pull them in. I think they took it back to Massey and got it sorted, not sure what they did.

It has been this way from new. Occasionally they go in without an issue but more often than not they don't. I kind of assumed it was normal but it is beginning to become a pain in the arse and I am thinking it can't possibly be right.

The tractor was quite new when we had this trouble.

I don't know if this will help (different tractor) but giving mine a squirt with the air pressure line seemed to do the trick. Sometimes all it takes is a grain of sand.

My mate was telling me today that some Masseys had an optional extra fitted to stop the spool valves ' creeping' with such things as fertiliser spreaders fitted with small rams for shut offs. It would have been around the age of tractor in question......a shot in the dark maybe.

Well if you cant get a proper fix, you could tee into the line with a small tap, just open it to fit the pipe. Let the tap drain into a drain tank .........

I think that's what I have on my 390. Fitted them myself to solve a problem. I think it was a similar problem, but I can't remember! The taps work fine anyway.
