Helping Refugees Thread

He does make a valid point, it gives support to Lewis Hamiltons views with regards to how folk of colour are treated differently.
Supposing I had never in my life donated towards aid in black countries, is your logic that I should definitely not help in this situation either, that it would be morally wrong? Get a grip.

Id like to keep this thread on point, to share ways in which we can help in this particular crisis, so take your bs accusations of racism elsewhere.

Start a petition to enable Ukrainian refugees to settle here, I have no objection to that. It will take years to rebuild there country, Russia will make sure of that. We have donated a fair bit, they need shelter and security to make any credible difference.

My sister in law has volunteered and has travelled to provide medical help, we could let a few thousand come over, especially families with young children.

What’s stopping you from starting this petition? You’re all over the place here, like I said, get a grip. If you've nothing helpful to add do everyone a favour and keep quiet.

There is a large Polish community locally and all the local schools are collaborating on collecting donations of 'stuff' - eg one collecting simple medical items (bandages, antiseptic creams, women's sanitary items etc), another collecting food, another, food etc. There are lorries taking it out to Poland for distribution this Friday. Lots of similar initiatives all round the country, I am donating some stuff (blankets etc) and buying some medical bits, candles etc (there is a list) which will be sent via a Ukranian Catholic Church Community in Peterborough.

Disasters Emergency Committee has launched an appeal, which can be gift aided and the Govt will also match.

Are you going to help refugees from conflicts in all parts of the World? Syria, Yemen Palestine?

Or are you just concerned about white Europeans?
By the same argument, if you give to British Heart Foundation, should you feel guilty because you don't give to Cancer Research? Or is that Cancerist? No one can help everyone and anyone who is charitable - in whatever way, should not feel guilty.

Very commendable but aren't the Poles refusing to let people of colour in?

Monthly Direct Debit to a group supporting refugees from the Middle East plus most of the family work for organisations and charities that help those less fortunate.

My original post was spurred by the difference between threads on here supporting Ukrainian refugees and others condemning refugees crossing the English Channel.

The UK has far more moral responsibility to support refugees from the Middle East as our historical interference in that region is a large part of their current problems

I think many of us spread our donations, because there are so many charities asking for money all the time. I was involved with a UK charity and so I get news letters from,https://www.thirdsector.co.uk/royal-charity-defends-itself-questions-salaries-top-staff/management/article/1747727?bulletin=governance-bulletin&utm_medium=EMAIL&utm_campaign=eNews Bulletin&utm_source=20220224&utm_content=Third Sector Governance Bulletin (15)::www_thirdsector_co_uk_art_2&email_hash= , and before I donate anything I often look at how the money is spent because some have large reserves. Charities are very often big business and I think people are wary, but also I have seen a lot of people give hours and hours during covid, stood our in sun and often rain, because they could see their efforts were having some effect.
I think the difference is with Ukraine that many companies and communities have links with that area, so its a lot easier to donate things, and not cash that you send to that area, cutting out the 'middleman' much as possible. We have a large industrial estate and lorry park about a mile away, and a lot of the staff come from Eastern Europe. I do not think people are donating because the population is mainly white, but because they think they can actually make a difference. You give money, you get an email back, and that's it, you have no control on how it is spent.
I have tried donating meat, and home goods to local charities and it not as easy as you think. Meat being donated was straight from the local butcher, with full traceability, you would have thought I was offering them smack.
Our local Emmaus,https://emmaus.org.uk/, seems to recycle everything possible, and well as providing skills and friendship.
I used to donate to the BHF, but I did some sorting work in one of the shops, and the the amount of perfectly usable clothing that went for rags, at 50p/kg, because they could/would not sell it in the shop, made me stop. Local school uniform, because it had a logo, went in the rags.

I have no idea, but should that stop me from sending anything? I did similar for Afghan refugees, does that pass your inspection? Anything else you would like to vet? I've been Trustee of a couple of charities, is that OK or should I support all charities to make it fair?

it is a very confusing situation out there, the Ukrainians are not allowing men of fighting age to leave and there may be resistance for allowing people of colour in without the correct paperwork.
Both are insisting women and children first
please do not automatically think it is racism

One thing is for sure, the situation is dire, and will only get worse.

There is no doubt, Moldova will be next, so all the Ukrainians who have fled their, added to the misplaced Moldovans is going to escalate this to monumental numbers.

One local who is organising wagons to Ukraine is asking if anyone has fuel cans to send fuel and let the wagons get back.
Ideal opportunity for farmers and machinery dealers to send some empty 20 litre and 200 litre oil drums to a better use?

I'm asking a genuine question. Did the people now so interested in refugees in this region do anything to help those families recently freezing to death on the Poland Belarus border?

Red Cross, Save the Children, Medicine Sans Fontieres (sic) have been helping refugees from war torn areas around the World for decades. They help all races and creeds
From what I’ve seen they also help themselves!!

I would guess perhaps baby food, nappies etc, sanitary items, toothpaste, soap ? Tinned and dried foods would seem be the sensible option, maybe some small treats for young children, chocolates or sweets?

Our local collection centres are now just taking medical stuff & nappies at present, but including small scissors, wound creams (gemolene, savlon), paracetamol, also calpol for children, sanitary items, foot creams / lotions etc (all that walking). In my consignment that has now gone, I had also sent also soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, plus some dried food, cereal bars, cupasoups, those pasta things that are one step up from a cupasoup - lightweight, long life and just need boiling water.
