Mine swole up to the extent that I was unable to do up my trousers for nearly 3 weeks.
Dr laughed, and said it was the most impressive set of Jacobs she had ever laid eyes upon.....

Thought I'd resurrect this thead,I'm going in for my hernia op on the 14th July, being delaying it due to work load,I never seem to get a quiet period.
Hoping harvest won't start to early trying to get ducks in a row, realistically how soon will I be able to sit on a combine and drive, yes I've had a lot of lectures!!!!

Had mine (keyhole inguinal) done 8th June.

Did half day on tractor on day 7. Was slow and steady tedding out after getting the old man to do the mowing.

Then on day 8 rowed it up and carted bales with loader.

Wouldnt recommend as not at all comfortable due to sitting too upright and not really being able to look behind, and getting in and out was the worst bit, actually getting straightened out after getting out, but they said in the hospital to make sure to fully straighten every time. Combine would be worse as tend to sit forwards looking down.

Area of largest top incision was sorest for longest, but discomfort all the way down, apparently they have a good root around in there.

After a week or so there was a noticable improvement every day, after 2 weeks would be no problem, getting in and out will be the thing that limits it, and you'd be better of someone around to do anything strenuous like pulling out blockages and raising hoods.

And elastic waisted trousers are the way forward.

First week will be hopeless, then it will start improving rapidly if I remember. I'd say 10 days to 2 weeks you can start doing something. Avoid heavy lifting for a few months.

I had it done this time last year, non keyhole , I was doubting the dr when he said 6 weeks off lifting etc, but I wasn't able to sit in a jeep for 3 weeks ,I was back doing tractor work at 4 weeks , everybody is different depending on how low down it is etc, it's a very painful operation, don't rush the recovery .Best of luck.

No personal experience but a guy I spoke to shortly before I went in had gone in for keyhole but they couldn't get to it and had to go open surgery and at that point 8 days later he was only just able to walk down the street. He was a little over weight though, not sure how much that affects things.

The pain killers really do help, although I was told the stronger stuff (Dihydrocodeine) could cause constipation and only to use them for up to one day if really necessary. I didn't use them, ibuprofen and paracetamol together did the trick fine for the first 3 days, then on and off as required. Number 2s were not much for the first few days as it was, defo dont want to be getting constipated after a lower abdominal hernia op!

I was told to be as active as possible and it would speed recovery. found if i took it gently i could move around and lift to the side reasonably well early on, last thing you want to get involved with is livestock since the sudden unpredictable movements you have to react to are definitely to be avoided. We were getting our sheep clipped on day 12, and anything more than general herding and pen filling was still too much.

That would be somewhere between optimistic and foolhardy. With a big wound you will be much stiffer and you don't want to pull it apart. Can anyone else drive a combine?

Also amazed me how many people have had it, seemed like every second person I mentioned it to has had it sometime in the past, especially males, so probably plenty people you will know that can advise.

If push comes to shove my son,but unfortunately he's having a run of bad luck with his car test!
Plus who I share farm with is just starting radiotherapy.
It's been a stressful year.

Had my inguinal hernia repaired yesterday, full anaesthetic and open surgery. Very surprised how little it hurts just feels a little tight but nothing major. I can walk around like normal, not sure if that’s a good thing or not when you are supposed to rest.
It was quite worrying when they talked through possible complications from the surgery but so far I am very happy with how it has gone.

I'm in my sixties now and had an emergency hernia op when I was 21. No keyhole stuff then and those were the days that you were kept in hospital for a week or more for something like that. Never had any problems after that but do take it easy or you'll be back to square one. My father had a hernia problem most of his life and only reluctantly had it sorted later in his life. He looked years younger afterwards.
