Heterosexual Civil Partnerships

I see the Church of England have instructed their priests not to bless heterosexual civil partnerships as there may be sex involved ... and sex is reserved for the sanctity of marriage.

In what scenario would this be an issue? Surely the point of a heterosexual civil partnership is to avoid the religious baggage associated with marriage.

No idea but to my mind they are in danger of becoming an irrelevance to a lot of people

Letter in today’s Times

“Sir
The latest outpouring from the House of Bishops about the nation’s sex life is surely a case of the blind preaching to the deaf. Do the Bishops really think that many (or any) people wil take any notice? It is verging on the delusional. The days when bishops could determine the private behaviour of the citizen are long gone.

Signed: The Rev Ian Williams, Worcs.”

Lovely story in today’s Times about how the Church is tying itself up in knots about sex and gay priests ....

“Foreshaw-Cain said most bishops were turning a blind eye to gay priests in sexual relationships. He said one was asked by his bishop: “Are you having sex with your partner?”
The priest replied: “No, I’m having coffee with you.”

Taking one biblical perspective, its a fairly consistent theme running from beginning to end that the Christian life should be about service and sacrifice and love and grace and humility - not about constructing religions and huge edifices. In the old testament, God reduced the arrogance of the Hebrews several times, in order that they didn't let their priorities get out of order. In the New Testament, Jesus again brought the Jewish leaders down to size for their corruption and infatuation with 'The Law'. He spent most his time with ordinary people, healing the sick, grieving with the bereaved.

Churches may come and go. Christianity will always be around. We have a certain fixed idea in the west of how a church should look. Numbers are nice, but a Christian community can be formed with any number of people from two and above. If you go to Iran, anywhere in the middle east, China, christians have different expectations. They are happy to be able to meet together in small numbers in their homes, to study, pray, praise and have friendship, without being dragged out and beaten, thrown in prison, or killed. These 'churches' are most like the ones in the New Testament times - not the cathedrals of the west.
