i mentioned this to my agronomist and his view was that soil temperatures are way to low....get some early N on their backward crops.
i do have half my wheat after beans
in the 1970s the view was put some on a frost but then we had dryer winters
now with wetter winters it will get washed away before it is available

I used to be on the lookout for a couple of hard frosts to get a first top dressing of N on our sticky wheat and, from 3rd week of Jan, but preferred a little later. T200 was more a guide i reckoned really...
LGP equipment allowed a bit more flexibility, the contractor's Agribuggy was a revelation, then I kitted up with a quad and a Logic tandem axle 12m fert spreader.

Have to finish autumn drilling first ! got an all nighter on tonight direct drilling winter beans..........get some early N on their backward crops.
FW always had a stock photo of a 2wd Ford 6710 putting fert on wheat. The ground was frozen solid. Might have even had some snow on it. Halcyon days.
Anyhoo....way, way too wet to consider doing anything here, even ploughing.

9/10 years your doing well to get some early N on OSR by the end of Feb never mind the start of it. its still pretty much winter & can be right thru march also.

Its ok my wheat will be getting plenty of N from the volunteer beans... incidentally, just to hijack this thread.. are there any herbicide options to take beans out of wheat if ground is frozen (which is the only time it might be fit to travel).. and don't say a hand hoe! Mind you the kids are "home schooling" maybe they can earn their keep

the beans are not about 90% ground coverage on one 10ac field not sure there will be any wheat still alive by time it warms up
