So looking at getting a another pickup for my dad to run about the farm in i have a 21 plate dmax that does all the towing and long trips. So just wanting a truck for stock checks and maybe occasianal bit of local trailer work. Been looking at hilux's and seen a few 3 litre ones with 140- 170 thousand miles on. Is that sort of milage a problem? Never bought that high miles before. Opinions welcome.

170K miles is only about 270K km . . . ?

as long as price is right & condition is ok, I wouldnt care about how far it has travelled.

mine has done 320,000 km with no issues

320,000 km ( 200,000 miles if I’m correct ?)

Apart from regular oil / filter changes & consumables ( belts, brake pads etc ) the only mechanical issue was the drive pulley on the alternator about 20,000 km ago. Easily & cheaply fixed

One thing to look for, is a build up of sludge in the intake manifold / EGR ( many people delete the EGR for this reason ).
I had mice chew the wiring harness underneath the intercooler & when I pulled it all apart to repair it ( at about 280,000 km ? ), there was an amount of sludge build up in the intake. I think removing it did improve performance & economy ?

No rust whatsoever. ( however, I am 400 km inland, it’s never been to the coast & we don’t have salt on our roads. It has driven through a lot of flood water, mud & wet gravel roads in its life though. I never really bother washing it either . . . )
Has had a pretty hard life.

I did upgrade the suspension ( but then, suspension components are consumable wear items just like tyres / brakes etc anyway ) at about 200,000 km with heavier Pedders springs, shocks & bushes, with an extra 2” lift, but that was to improve the ride & carrying capacity on our dirt roads, rather than increasing the carrying / towing capacity, if that makes sense.
The standard Toyota suspension leaves a bit to be desired on our dirt roads when you regularly have 400 kg of tool boxes on the back all the time . . .

PS - it’s only 10 years old, heaps of life left in it yet. I will probably give it to my 15 yr old son when he gets his licence. Should do at least another 10 years easily . . .
My HZJ75 is 26 years old, all original engine & trans, no rust & is still in daily service . . .
