extensive independent trials by our Department of Agriculture years ago showed that losses from urea due to volatilisation were not as high as thought.
I have actually posted the findings on TFF a few times now, but couldn’t be fudgeed looking for it again . . .
Any loss is a loss though. Increases the high price already. SOA is a safer bet without moisture available.

that’s why we always used to pre sow our urea or anhydrous ammonia, or modify planters to apply it at planting, or, in the case of summer row crops - side dress it. But spreading urea in crop ( for cool season crops anyway ) has become a LOT more popular here in the last 10 yrs or so

What do you mean by spreading in the crop? Broadcasting urea onto the soil surface? That's a bit risky without moisture and in wide row spacing. For broadacre/dryland cropping at Moree we either put urea down the spout in May with the wheat seed in June. Both with soil moisture. For cotton it was incorporated or dissolved in the irrigation water (which killed the fish in the storage reservoirs when pumped back in!).

Well I’m resigned to it now. Going to be a ton an acre down at least. We have lost too much of the season peeing about with dry and frost plus mauled in winter crops. Prices should be rising. Won’t be much surplus here anyway.
