Highways England vandalising bridges.

its a old railway line not a river I don't think even those muppets would be so daft
I don't know, old railway cuttings like that often turn into very wet boggy holes.

To me it looks like they have made a hard-core or drymix dam on either side and then pumped concrete in under the bridge. Which I would guess, as the concrete shrinks and settles will leave a gap between the bottom of the bridge and the concrete. :banghead:

What they are doing is a joke. There is no way they could ever just remove the infill like they claim.

Highways England are supposed to be responsible for cycling - why don't they just open the old railways as cycle routes.

There are some they are doing which are not completely filled in. They set corrugated sections up stone face the ends and fill the void with 'expanding concrete' so you end up with a smaller opening but still able to pass through.

I can understand why they say it costs £100k to fill in now! Several locally that they want to infill because apparently they are only rated to take 3.5t despite 40t lorries crossing them frequently 🙈

it really is amazing what they carry , seeing as they were designed for a horse and cart to go over.
It is a shame that they are closing them off as these old lines make wonderful footpath/bridle/cycleways etc. only issue where some neighbouring farmer has helped himself to the ballast, which is not so uncommon and certainly not illegal if the line had been returned to the owners

Probably still owned by Railtrack, we have some up the road they own, and the track was removed in the 1960,s, they fence it to stop it being used as a bridal way

That’s a good idea. It would keep the Lycra clad, middle aged, fitness models off the road then.👍

Lycra clad young ladies would obviously still be allowed access to the main roads, and anywhere else they wanted to strut their stuff….

Brick both sides up, couple of windows and a door = desirable period country residence. :D
