Highways England vandalising bridges.

Two years ago, there was a presentation at Groundswell by the Knebb Estate, as part of his talk Charles Burrell talked about linking habitats with "green ways" to allow species to cross barriers such as roads, this type of ecological vandalism stops any of that in it's tracks. Typical of government bodies who seem able to do whatever they want, with no oversight or censure, and if there is a problem, everyone shrugs their shoulders "nothing to see here, carry on" and the people in charge continue to cruise to their index linked pensions.

What on earth do they think they are doing! If any farmer had done this he would probably be in Jail. :banghead:

Was an item on the Jeremy Vine R2 programme recently. Highways England refused to comment

Such a “do as I say, not as I do” society we live in.

on one hand doing that to a Victorian structure is “ok”, on the other hand I can’t replace the rotten windows on our Victorian house with something that looks exactly the same, but not fecked, coz they’re listed and prohibitively expensive to fix, so we paint them and let the rot continue 🙄.

I replaced a lot of our windows with top spec plastic double glazed units . The "listed buildings" woman came round and absolutely insisted they be taken out and replaced with softwood forthwith . Cost me £2.5K to do it . She left about a couple of months afterwards and the incoming one wasn't bothered . They did a local listed Victorian factory up later, top spec waterside living , only a coupla miles away, as a residential "condo " - dozens of windows - all plastic !

I know a chap up here who was dealing with them and they were incredibly fussy, to the point he asked what would happen if the bloody things got dropped by accident. They said he’d be picking up all the bits off the street and getting them put right with any broken or damaged pains to be replaced with crown glass. Which I understand may be hand crafted.

I can understand in some building of historic importance, but a half rotten old farm house in the middle of nowhere, described in the listing as “derelict”.
Ffs.

probably just replace them once they start falling apart proper, and keep the old bits in case the Wombles ever do come to check.

I always think of that grand designs chap who did the peel tower in the dales,
There is time I think I would have said feck English heritage and bulldozed it as it seems that’s what they really wanted was a heap of rocks to pine over
